When a newly married bride dies by suicide, every single media covers the story and husband of the deceased woman is arrested even before any investigation. However, reverse the genders and this is the reality for Men in India.
Case:
24-year-old man from Patiala died by suicide after he was fed up with his in-laws’ constant demand for money in the name of alimony.
Harmanpreet Singh has given a statement to the police that his brother Simranjit Singh (24) had a love marriage sometime ago with Jasmeet Kaur – resident of Khalsa Mohalla Patiala.
Soon after marriage, Simranjit’s mother-in-law Ravinder Kaur and father-in-law Harmeet Singh allegedly started harassing Simranjit. Newly married man’s in-laws were constantly harassing and pressurising him to transfer his land to their daughter. When Simranjit refused to do so, his mother-in-law took her daughter back to their maternal home.
Later, wife’s parents started pressuring the victim to cough up Rs 70 lakh as alimony post divorce.
Suicide
Fed up of this constant harassment from in-laws, Simranjit started living in his cousin Harpal Singh’s home.
On April 13, Simranjit called his cousin and informed him that his father-in-law was troubling him a lot and neither sending his wife to her matrimonial home. Due to this, he expressed to end his life.
His cousin persuaded Simranjit not to take any drastic step, however, at 4 in the morning, Simranjit Singh ended his life by consuming poison.
After receiving this news, victim’s family members reached the spot, where they recovered a hand written letter, in which Simranjit confessed of ending his life due to harassment from in-laws.
Police Statement
According to the police, the young man had a love marriage. Shortly after the marriage, the girl’s parents took her with them and started demanding Rs 70 lakh alimony after divorce. While the in-laws have been booked, there has been no arrest yet.
