A 32-year-old man was murdered by the father of his alleged girlfriend while he was out on bail in POCSO Case. According to a TOI report, the man, now deceased, had eloped with a minor girl in October last year, and the duo were brought back by police in March 2021.
Case:
According to police, 32-year-old Vijay Mer fled with a minor girl in October 2020. The girl’s father then filed a missing person’s complaint and also charged Mer under the POCSO law.
Later, the girl’s father filed a habeas corpus petition in the Gujarat High Court, after which the police identified the minor and Mer, who were living together in Manavadar town of Junagarh, and brought them back in March 2021.
Mer’s Arrest
After the two were handed over by the police, Mer was arrested and charged under POCSO for raping a minor. He had been in jail ever since.
According to the police, Mer was released on bail a few weeks ago. The officer who spoke with TOI said,
When the accused was out on bail, he would call the girl’s father and threaten to run away with his daughter again. The girl’s father promised not to cut her hair until he killed Mer.
Subsequently, with the help of his friend Dinesh, the father killed Mer on Thursday night by attacking him at his home with a sharp weapon.
CCTV footage also showed the suspects attacking Mer while he was sitting at home. Police said that they found more than a dozen wounds on Mer’s body.
According to reports, Mer’s brother Ashwin Mer has filed murder charges against the rape victim’s father and his accomplice Dinesh Rangpara.
Both the accused are in police custody and are being questioned.

- We would refrain from commenting on the POCSO case, as the girl is a minor and the accused, now deceased, was 30+
- There could be a possibility of Mer influencing the minor while eloping with her; There could also be a possibility of the two being in love (eventhough law does not permit any consensual physical relationship for a minor girl)
- However, no one must take law in their hands as this will set a wrong example of murders being justified outside the purview of law
- Shouldn’t girls be made accountable in some way, if they are willingly eloping with adult men?
