MDO Exclusive | IAS Officer Lokesh Jangid Opens Up About Twitter DM Controversy

6.1k
VIEWS

Twitter was abuzz over the weekend about a Direct Message (DM) by IAS officer Lokesh Jangid to another twitter user (a woman), who decided to make the same public without any discussion offline.

The direct message sent by the IAS officer on the social media platform read as below:

Direct Message by IAS Officer on Twitter

The lady in question, who has now restricted the tweet and comments on it, decided to post the same publicly, disclosing the name of the officer. While posting the message, she wrote,

Yeh sab kya hai? (What is all this?)

Twitter users who initially started attacking and name calling the IAS officer, soon got divided, where another set of netizens found nothing wrong with the message.

We reached out to Lokesh to understand his side of the story and what does he have to say about this whole controversy.

Interview

MDO: I saw your twitter handle where you said you were going to be away for a while. How did this controversy start?

Lokesh Jangid: I’ve been away from Twitter since Aug 10, and shall be away till Oct 15, in terms of not posting any tweets. Yesterday, I had to get in touch with a lawyer in Supreme Court for some personal work so I logged into my account. While doing so, I was browsing through the Twitter feed and came across Ms X’s tweet on Swara’s (Swara Bhasker) house warming pictures, wherein she had accused Swara of being supportive of Varna System.

I then read her bio and also some other tweets on her profile. Her bio said she’s an Educationist and working on critical Pedagogy. I’m also working in Education Dept in state of Madhya Pradesh in India and presently we are looking after framing of State Curriculum Framework (SCF) under National Education Policy 2020 of Govt of India.

Her other tweets suggested she was someone with research interests in eradication of caste based inequalities.

This combined with her profile as an Educationist made me feel I can discuss with her and have her inputs on this issue. I felt she would be an interesting person to speak to, on an intellectual level.

So I sent her a DM, saying I’m a civil servant, and came across her profile and would like to offer her to meet over tea IF SHE WAS FREE & WILLING. So, this is how it all transpired.

MDO: Did she respond to your message privately, questioned you why you wanted to meet or why were you sending her the message randomly?

Lokesh Jangid: I did not receive any response from her end. Neither did I text her a single word after this first communication from my end. That is why it came as an absolute shocker to me when she shared the screenshot. Had she asked me the reason, I would have elaborated the same.

Had she expressed her inability or lack of interest, I would have put the whole thing to rest. Well, as I said, I was absolutely shocked to see her sharing the screenshot. It was totally uncalled for and unwarranted.

MDO: What was your reaction when you saw her making your DM public? Why didn’t you confront her publicly since twitter users were already being harsh on you with one sided message?

Lokesh Jangid: I didn’t confront her publicly because 1) As I said, I’m on a sabbatical from posting any tweets till Oct 15. I wanted to keep my word and not post anything until Oct 15 despite such provocations. 2) I have better things to do than waste my energy on confronting it.

MDO: Twitter has been divided. While many have labelled you as someone misusing your power, quite a few of them have also come forward stating that there was nothing wrong in the DM to be made public. Do you think, the DM was posted because you hold a position of power and twitter verification? You are also accused of misusing your IAS tag while reaching out to the woman. Your comments?

Lokesh Jangid: No ways, DM had nothing to do with position of power. She is not working in my office. She is not having any official work with my office. So there’s absolutely no question of me using my position as a leverage over here. By no stretch of imagination, can it be linked to my position. And those who are doing it are being biased against me.

MDO: Some netizens have given this DM an angle of seeking a random date or using Twitter as Tinder……What is your reply for them?

Lokesh Jangid: Well, there’s nothing like random date. There are things that are platonic, and at times not even connected with gender. Any which way, I totally fail to comprehend how did she find it offensive or for that matter having even a trace of ulterior motive. Had I persisted after her denial, or had I DM’d her again, after couple of days or a week or so, she could have reported the matter to Twitter/ blocked me, and then might have gone public.

MDO: What do you think this episode has done to your image as an IAS officer?

Lokesh Jangid: Firstly, by doing so, it was highly immature on her part. With regards to my image, I think at the end of the day, one is answerable only to one’s conscience. I don’t think I’ve done even an iota of wrong, either legally or morally. So I would rather ignore the trolls who are passing judgements without knowing the nitty gritty details of the matter.

However I’m disappointed that I chose a wrong person for ‘tea’. Going by her tweets, I had anticipated a certain level of maturity from the other person, which was clearly conspicuous by its absence in the way she dealt with the whole thing.

I feel one should also clearly segregate the personal and professional lives of civil servants and other public figures.

Here are some of the reactions on this matter on twitter:

Ok, He asked you Out,You Could have just said, No and Move on,

But NO,

You posted the Screenshot…

……….WoW……..

— EHSAN HABIB (@ehsanECE) August 28, 2021

Asking for coffee and meetup to a random stranger is too much…. Logo pe hasi aari jo bol rhe .. he is asking politely.. kl ko usko behen ko politely puchega tab bolna

— Deepak 🇮🇳 (@writesdeepak) August 29, 2021

Totally unnecessary bro. It’s nt the first or last dm you got.Jst bcz by his profile he seemed to get an edge ovr the rest of the guys in ur dms u posted it here, that just u calling fr clout, by literally demeaning him, we girls get rly rly bad dms, y aren’t they posted by you?

— incogni (@notme_incogni) August 28, 2021

Making it public was seriously unnecessary. It looks attention seeking because it’s a verified account. Don’t even reply na, just delete it. Hadd hai

— Attu (@taptap12345678) August 28, 2021

Men offended in the comments, this is NOT how you ask women out. Not from your official work handle, not by mentioning multiple times that you’re an IAS. Not by mentioning the political tweet that led you to the person’s. 💀💀 Also, it looks more like a threat than asking out 💀

— FiveShortSummerNova (@eatprotectlove) August 29, 2021

The man’s texted so politely…where is the evil in it?

— Madhav Sadashiv Golwalkar (@MadhavGolwalkar) August 28, 2021

Yeh sab baat innitiate karne ka tareeka hai! If you are interested say Yes if not Say NO! Or you can ignore that too! But faltu me aise post krke Attention lene ka treeka to boht galat hai

— GOURAV HANS (@Gouravhns) August 28, 2021

Seriously what is wrong in asking somebody out? Don't keep your DM open if you don't want anyone to message you. You are just cynical, nothing else

— Anjali (@CoffeeIsBack) August 28, 2021

High sense of superiority in the way message is phrased. I fail to understand why all these guys in comments can't see that. Just because Lokesh is an IAS officer, can he directly ask random girls out, assuming the girls would be falling head over heels for his offers?

— Gobbar (@Gobbar_) August 29, 2021

I somehow feel both of them are wrong. IAS could just have said hi and waited for response. Preeti could have replied negative and close the matter. I don't have balls to do what Lokesh did. Possibly that's the reason I'm still single. 😅
