If a woman is undergoing a bad marriage, you will have a dozen persons around her encouraging her to take a stand and walk out of an abusive marriage. However, if a husband is undergoing a traumatic time in his marital home, he is virtually trapped by our gender biased laws and has no exit.
One such unique case has ben reported from Gujarat, where a young man eloped with a divorced woman some years ago to get married. However, the husband has now filed a petition in family court to grant him divorce, since his wife made his life miserable within a few months of their marriage.
Case:
Bharat Parmar (name changed) is a resident of Makarpura area in Vadodara. Bharat who is a mechanical engineering student had eloped with one Sangeeta (name changed) in 2016 to marry her. Sangeeta was divorced from her first husband and later Bharat and his newly wedded bride rented their pad in the city.
According to the husband, Sangeeta started making his life hell within few months of marriage while the man was juggling between college and work to support his family financially. Bharat also had to shoulder the responsibility of his mother and sister along with wife.
As alleged by the husband, Sangeeta would not allow him to send money for supporting his mother and sister. She also forced Bharat to stop all aide to his family. Such frequent fights and harassment led to Bharat not being able to focus on his studies or job, while being burdened with responsibilities from all ends. He was also unable to attend college due to domestic abuse by his wife.
On one of the occasions, Sangeeta visited his college to pick him up and Bharat went home without creating a scene. She would torture him even during his exams and one day he just left his house as the woman would not let him study. His mother and sister had also filed a missing complaint with the police then as Bharat did not share where he was going.
Petition For Divorce
Bharat separated from Sangeeta in April 2017 and the two have been living separately since then. He has now filed a petition at the Family Court through his lawyer to obtain divorce from Sangeeta.
He also alleged that his wife had been threatening him and his family to send them to jail on charges of domestic violence. According to Bharat, his wife had harassed her first husband in a similar manner and eventually he got divorced.
In his petition, Bharat said that he had to leave his matrimonial home twice as the woman had made his life hell. He also stated that he did not get the happiness that anyone should get after marriage.
Bharat is currently living with his mother and sister and working for a private company in Ahmedabad.
