Canadian singer and writer Justin Bieber is suing two Twitter users for more than $20 million (INR 160 crore approx) after he was publicly accused of sexual assault.
The 26-year-old singer has filed lawsuits in the US against the accounts held under the names “Danielle” and “Kadi”, and said he has “indisputable documentary evidence” that the allegations are untrue.
Background
This week “Danielle” published a claim that Bieber had sexually assaulted her in a Four Seasons hotel room after a festival appearance in 2014. In a string of messages, Bieber said he was staying with girlfriend at the time, Selena Gomez, in an AirBnb on the night of the alleged attack, producing receipts and branding the claim “factually impossible”.
The singer also consulted with his wife, model Hailey Bieber, before going public with the denials. His official statement to the fans read:
Rumours are rumours but sexual abuse is something I don’t take lightly. I want to be clear. There is no truth to this story. In fact as I will soon show I was never present at that location.
The second Twitter account “Kadi” had separately accused Bieber of sexual assault at 2.30am in his hotel room at The Langham in New York in 2015.
Bieber’s Version
Bieber, who is claiming $10 million (INR 75 crores approx) in damages from each account, said he believes “Kadi” is a superfan who hangs around hotels but whom he has never actually met.
Bieber said he has proof that he was in New York that night for the Met Gala, staying at a private after-party until 4am before getting a snack from a hot dog stand. As for the May 5, 2015 allegation, Bieber claims Kadi fabricated it because she knew Bieber attended the Met Gala.
