Divorced Mother Leaves 3-Year-Old Baby Alone At Home & Spends The Week With Lover; Child Dies Of Hunger & Dehydration

A woman in Japan left her three-year-old daughter alone at her apartment for eight days, while she went out to stay with her boyfriend. The baby was left with no food and water, resulting in death out of hunger.

The 24-year-old woman has been arrested by the Japanese police, for the murder of her own daughter. She left her daughter at home and went for eight days to meet her long-distance boyfriend who lived in Kyushu, said the police on July 7.

The woman identified as Saki Kakehashi, has been arrested for negligence as a guardian resulting in the death of daughter Noa. She worked at an “Izakaya” Japanese-style pub and admitted to the allegations she has been accused of.  As per the police, Kakehashi and Noa used to live by themselves at an apartment in Tokyo’s ward of Ota.

Investigators found that Kakehashi traveled all the way to Kagoshima on June 5 to see her boyfriend, leaving her daughter Noa alone at home. Saki returned only on June 13, after which she made an emergency call at 3:55 pm, and informed the official,

My daughter is not breathing.

Later Noa was taken to the hospital but pronounced dead. The reason for her death given by the doctors was ‘hunger and severe dehydration’. The autopsy report revealed Noa’s stomach was nearly empty. And she had developed rashes on her bottom as she had worn the same diaper throughout those eight days.

Saki in her earlier statement said,

My daughter’s condition worsened a few days before my emergency call. She just ate a little bit of rice porridge. She laid down and suffered from repeated coughing.

Background

Kakehashi had been divorced from Noa’s father three years ago. And hence, the single mother moved into the current apartment with her daughter. The woman has been working at the Izakaya pub and had enrolled Noa at a daycare center. However, since a year, she had stopped sending her baby to the creche too. Her daughter used to remain alone at home while she continued working at the same place.

She used to play pachinko, eat and drink with her friends until the next morning. According to the investigations, even a few months ago, in the month of May, the mother had stayed for three days in Kagoshima.

A man, 70, who lives in the same apartment building as Saki, said in his statement,

I have never seen them together, and I didn’t see her daughter even once this year.

Saki has been arrested for the murder of her three-year-old daughter and as quoted by the police, the woman in her statement said,

I didn’t expect that she would die.

Well, we cannot generalise how every mother is like Saki. But the sole custody of children only to one parent does raise questions on the bond and care given to the child. Often single mothers get into new relationships after separation with their former husbands. Everyone has a right to live a happy life. But in the bargain, the interest of the biological child is somewhere compromised. If both separated parents have equal access to their children, either of them can always be with the child, whenever the other partner needs her/his space.
