Often we read articles about harassment to daughter-in-laws by their husband’s parents. We also endlessly write about rights of women, their freedom to do whatever they want and how no one should question their independence. However, what happens when right or independence of married women start turning into unreasonable demands? Should Men / Husbands be asked to bear such a burden for the rest of their lives? Why does any responsibility for a married woman today become sexist and patriarchal?
Case:
A woman named Shivani (name changed) got married to Vivek (name changed) around a year ago. As soon as she moved into her matrimonial home, wife started having disputes with her husband.
Shivani’s mother often interfered as she saw differences between her daughter and her spouse. The mother also felt that doing household chores was troublesome for Shivani and thus the woman started visiting her daughter’s in-laws’ home every evening to keep a tab on what was happening. Expectedly, the in-laws of the woman objected to the same, and the couple decided to part ways.
Matter Reached Family Court
The mother of the woman wanted the couple to divorce and the matter reached Gwalior Family Court. The couple was counselled to live together by a mediation cell, however, both of them refused to be with each other any longer.
The mother of the woman also laid conditions that:
- She would visit her daughter’s place every evening to check on her
- Her daughter will not cook food in her husband’s home
- The husband will have to pay her Rs 10,000 per month separately for her personal expenses
Man’s family on the other side were also willing to end the marriage since they were not able to cope with the daily tantrums of their daughter-in-law’s mother.
Another Case From Same Court
In another story, a husband submitted an application of monthly maintenance from his wife, stating that he needed financial support since it was him who served her tea and food on the bed. Ramesh was married to Rakhi, who is a nurse at a government hospital.
The wife would not do any household chores as she was employed in a job. Thus, as per couple’s mutual understanding, the husband would undertake all household chores. He also looked after the children.
From serving his wife with bed tea to laying the dinner, he did everything. However, when the wife started taunting at him daily, the matter reached court.
In this case, the man demanded maintenance from his wife, on pretext similar to non working wife getting maintenance from her working husband. The wife who refused to live with him, later returned home, however, did not agree to pay him any maintenance.
According to Kamlesh Sharma, Chief Counsellor, Family Court,
The cases of mothers interfering in daughters’ married life are increasing day by day, resulting into breakdown of families. Cases like these are more to be seen in counselling sessions now, wherein the mothers of wives are always in the forefront to put down conditions more than the daughters themselves. Cooking food is also an issue now.
