Gay Couple Adopted HIV Positive Baby Girl Who Was Rejected By Ten “Normal” Families

An Argentinian gay couple adopted an HIV positive baby girl who had previously been rejected by 10 other families. The child, named Olivia, was born with the virus. Earlier attempts to adopt out the girl had not been successful, with prospective parents apparently being wary of the child’s HIV status.

However, the angel’s fate changed after married couple Damian Pighin (42) and Ariel Vijarra (39) agreed to adopt the girl when she was only 28-days-old. They said that they knew the adoption was right when they instantly felt affection towards the child. Vijarra told local media,

As soon as I saw her, I felt she was part of my life. The connection was immediate. We held her in our arms, we gave her the bottle and she looked at us with her eyes wide open, without crying.

Vijarra and Pighin live in the Sante Fe province of Argentina and have been married since 2012. The country legalized same sex marriage two years earlier. The couple works to help other couples adopt unwanted children at the non governmental organization they created, which is called Acunar Familias, or “Cradle Families.”

The heartwarming story comes just months after a new study, called PARTNER2, proved that there is zero risk of transmitting HIV while on antiretroviral treatment. Advances in medicine over the last few decades have radically transformed treatment options for those living with the virus, which had previously been almost invariably fatal.

Their daughter is on treatment and the virus is now undetectable

As soon as the couple took her home, Olivia started to respond to her HIV treatment, gained weight, and after a couple years, the family got the absolutely amazing news that the virus was no longer detectable in her blood. In addition to being unable to spread the HIV, Olivia doesn’t have to worry about further damage to her immune system. Olivia, is now on treatment for HIV and the virus is now undetectable as a result.

A year later, a woman approached them and said she had heard about their story and wanted them to adopt her daughter too. They agreed and shortly afterwards welcomed their second daughter Victoria into the world.

There is no known cure for HIV yet. However, treatment can control HIV and enable people to live a long and healthy life.  A functional cure would suppress the amount of HIV virus in the body to such low levels that it can’t be detected or make you ill – but it would still be present.
