Men’s Day Out has always expressed concern over free allowances, free bus/metro travel, free scooties, salaries to homemakers (read: women), just by default. We are strongly of the opinion that anything that is given easily and freely to any fully abled human, can be detrimental in the long run to our society as a whole. Often these freebies are rolled out a few months before elections.
Similar thoughts – though not particularly towards women – have been echoed by Madras High Court on Wednesday, wherein the bench of Justices N Kirubakaran and B Pugalendhihas criticised both political parties who dole out such promises as well as the voters who elect such parties into power.
The Madras High Court on Wednesday expressed strong opinions against the freebie culture indulged in by political parties during election season and called for amending the Representation of Peoples Act, 1951, so that freebies offered by political parties are also viewed as a “corrupt practice” under Section 123.
The Bench said,
It is stated that every candidate has to shell out about Rs 20 crores in the election to an assembly constituency, as many of the people have become corrupt by selling their votes for one or a few thousands, Briyani and Quarter bottle. It is the stark reality. If that is so, how could the people expect good leaders? Do people who sell their votes, have any moral right to question their leaders?
It is raining freebies for Tamil Nadu Assembly elections … In the process, the honest tax payer is made a mute spectator of these expenditure by the Government. Consequently, even for any normal work no force is available in Tamil Nadu…Most of the North Indian workers are doing agriculture work and working in hotels, industries, shops, saloons, etc. in Tamil Nadu.
The bench added,
It would not be surprising to see migrant workers become property owners in due course of time and it may be the only achievement, probably, the political parties have attained through election promises by providing freebies for the past 20 years.
The Court noted that while each political party tries to undo the other in terms of populist promises, the populace would better be served if the promises made concerned the improvement of living standards, clean governance and infrastructure. However, “the election promises made by political parties are aimed at clinching power”. The court said,
Unfortunately, freebies are not connected with job creation, development, or agriculture. Voters are lured to cast votes in their favour by these magical promises. Once in 5 years, this tamasha is being continued for decades together. Promises have always remained as promises. Most of them except freebies are not implemented.
Otherwise, for the sake of finance, the State has to increase the number of liquor shops.
Following closely on the footsteps of the ruling state government, then Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari had written to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal demanding that the city government must exempt women from the four per cent registration fee on purchase of properties in the soon-to-be regularised colonies.

Women in Punjab will get to travel free of cost in all Government-run buses within the state from April 1, 2021. The cabinet on Wednesday stamped its approval on the scheme which the Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh announced earlier this month.
The Chief Minister had announced the free travel scheme in the Vidhan Sabha on March 5, as part of his government’s efforts to empower women and girls in the state. Punjab will undergo next state elections in Feb/Mar 2022.

MDO Take:
- Women have become a large vote bank for every single party today
- When religion, caste and vikas cards are not working as before, each party wants to appease only one gender in the name of empowerment
- Empowerment does not come by giving freebies to anyone
- Infact it makes one more dependent, lazy and someone who believes in getting privileges for life
- None of the political parties ever consider rolling freebies to genuine masses who are needy and deserve the same
- So technically, a well qualified earning woman won’t pay for her ticket, while an old frail man who is struggling for work, will have to cough up monthly travel expenses
- Its high time society – both men and women call out this farce
- Women empowerment champions should infact reject such practices, as the same project female gender, as weak and totally incapable
