On one hand we have numerous laws for women to give them protection against the atrocities caused by men, while on the other, there are some daughters who are responsible to ill treat their old parents in such a horrid way, especially when the senior citizens are possibly not physically fit and need their children the most.
A shocking incident came to light from Faridabad, NCR, where an old mother was thrown out of her own house by her two daughters. Following this traumatic experience, the elderly woman had to take shelter in a park for four days. Later, some people from an old age home rescued her. Here’s what happened.
A case was reported from Faridabad’s Sainik colony of Haryana when the mother was asked to leave her home by her own daughters. After being rendered homeless, she reached a park and lived there for four long days. Some passers-by and people visiting the park noticed her, who came forward to help the old woman.
They made a call to ‘Tau Devilal Old Age Home’ and a team arrived and took her along with them. Krushna Lal Bajaj, Director of Tau Devilal Old age home said,
She did not come to us voluntarily. She was surviving on her own in a park near her residence which is located in the Sainik colony. Some people and a few shopkeepers would see her and give her food to eat.
Bajaj also mentioned how some well wishers came forward to help her with the challenges she faced during these days in the park. He quoted:
The people who helped her noticed that there were no toilets to take care of her sanitisation. They somehow contacted Ravinder Gupta, who got them in contact with us, after which our team reached the woman.
The old age home rescuers asked the lady about her situation and the reason behind living in the park, to which she replied:
I’ve two daughters who have snatched my property from me and transferred the ownership to their names. My son is also on the road for his survival. My daughters trapped me and got my signatures on the property documents.
Bajaj also said that the woman asked them to help her get her property back. He quoted:
She requested us to get her property back. She wants to give it to her son, as her daughters have thrown her out of her own house.
The daughters had warned the woman from approaching police stating that one of her sons-in- law is an in-charge of a police station at Gurugram. As reported by Punjab Kesari, the police also did not help the woman because of the alleged connections her daughters had with them.
The old woman was harassed on a daily basis and was asked to vacate the home, as informed by Krushna Lal. He has reassured that he will try to get justice for the lady. Bajaj said,
We will help her as much as possible. We will try to get back her rights with the help of Mr Ravinder Gupta.
In its recent judgment this month, the Supreme Court ruled that daughters have a right in the parental property. A three-judge bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra said daughters have the right irrespective of whether a girl’s father was alive or not at the time of the 2005 amendment to the Hindu Succession Act, in 2005.
Our Take: While all children must be given equal rights, there must be strictest repercussions in case either of them misuses or ill-treats their senior citizen parents.
