A woman employee of a noted private school in Karnal had accused the owner, principal and a government official of gang rape sometime ago. Now, after nearly a month and a half later, the district police have arrested her and her husband for allegedly taking Rs 7.25 lakh from the accused to settle the case, said the police.
Rajiv Kumar, deputy superintendent of police (DSP), informed media that the owner of the private school gave a complaint to the police that the woman was initially demanding Rs 15 lakh from them to settle an alleged gang rape case.
The investigation in the matter begun and on August 21, Karnal superintendent of police (SP) Surender Singh Bhoria formed a team led by tehsildar Indri as a duty magistrate and Sanjeev Kumar, in-charge, civil line police station, and arrested the alleged rape survivor and her husband from Sector 12 near Nirmal Kutiya Chowk while they were accepting Rs 7.25 lakh.
The DSP said, the complainant had also alleged that Rs 6 lakh had already been given to the woman and this was her 2nd instalment.

DSP Rajiv said two FIRs have already been registered in this case, as the police had received counter complaints from both sides. As reported by TOI, this is the third FIR linked with that case. A special investigation team (SIT) is probing the matter.
The DSP further said a case has been registered against the woman under sections:
- 384
- 389
- 506… of the IPC
and her husband under section 120B.
On Saturday, both were produced before the court and sent to 14 days judicial custody.
Background:
The woman filed a gang rape complaint against all three accused, at the women’s police station on July 6, following which a case was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
In her complaint, the woman had alleged that she was raped in 2018 by the owner of the private school and a government official. She also accused the school principal of being party to the crime. She also alleged that they had been harassing her mentally and physically since then.
In a turn of events after her official complaint, the police claimed that the owner of the school had also filed a counter complaint of extortion against the teacher.
Vinay Bansal, the advocate of the woman, refuted the allegation and said the police were trying to implicate her in a false case. He said:
The allegations are baseless and we will prove it in the court.
Bansal also added that the police had sought two-day police remand, but the court did not agree and sent the woman to judicial custody. He further said that there was no chemical coating on currency notes and police claims of arresting her red-handed were false. He also alleged that a number of other influential people from Karnal were involved in her arrest. A court sent the couple to judicial custody, even as the police pressed hard for their police custody.
DSP Kumar confirmed that a police team had arrested them red handed in the presence of duty magistrate, while taking the money.
Earlier in July when the complaint was initially lodged, Bhoria then quoted:
When any complaint pertaining to crime against women comes, FIR is immediately lodged. As soon as the complaint was received, a case was registered under relevant provisions of IPC.
The reason behind setting up the SIT is that there was a complaint against the complainant pertaining to extortion, and the SIT will probe allegations of both sides.
