We often end up arguing how women have no rights in our country. However, what we don’t understand is the practical side of laws, where a husband can be arrested on mere word of a woman, but no action will be taken against wife, despite repeated requests and pleading by the abused man.
Such is one case reported last month from Ahmedabad, where a man alleged that his wife often thrashes him over domestic issues. He also claimed that his wife had also assaulted his 74-year-old mother after an argument with her.
Case:
Swapnil Doshi (47), a resident of Ahmedabad’s Navrangpura locality, got married to Minal Doshi (41) in 2011, without his parents’ consent. Soon after the wedding, Minal allegedly started picking up arguments with his parents over petty issues. To overcome this, the couple started living in a separate house, away from Swapnil’s parents.
However, even after moving to a different home, Minal continued to pick up arguments with Swapnil over petty issues which had absolutely no meaning, he said. She allegedly stopped giving food to him and their 8-year-old. The father-son duo often went to their relatives’ and neighbour’s home for food. When Swapnil’s parents learnt about the state of their son and grandson, they moved to his apartment.
Expectedly, Swapnil stated that an argument flared up between Minal and his elderly mother, identified as Rasila Doshi, over some issue in May last year (during lockdown). During the course of the argument, Minal began thrashing her mother-in-law brutally and she did not stop until her son pleaded with her not to beat his old grandmother.
Swapnil came back rushing to the house after he came to know that Minal had beaten up his mother. Minal allegedly picked up a fight with him and then assaulted him too.
On February 4 this year, Minal roughed up Swapnil again after he objected to a water bottle being thrown by her from their apartment on the fourth floor. Following this, he approached the Navrangpura police with his complaint.
What is even more shocking that the police did not even register his complaint at once – despite his old mother being a woman too had been injured. The FIR was only lodged after Swapnil submitted at least 10 applications of complaint to them.
