Chennai Man, His Parents Murdered By Wife & Her Family After Alimony Settlement Failed

The Chennai Police have arrested three persons in connection with the triple murder in the city’s Sowcarpet area that took place on November 11. A family of three – Thalil Chand (70), Pushpa Bai (70) and the couple’s son Sheetal Chand (42) – were found dead with bullet injuries at their house on Wednesday night.

Thalil Chand who ran a finance firm and his wife Pushpa Bai and their son — natives of Rajasthan — were found dead at their house on the first floor of a three-storey residential apartment on Vinayaga Maestri Street in Chennai. Police said they were gunned down by the unidentified assailants.

The accused persons, including Sheetal’s brother-in-law, were arrested from Maharashtra’s Solapur district after an intense car chase.

Background

Jayamala from Pune, and Sheetal Kumar got married through a matrimonial website 10-years ago. Sheetal and his wife, who moved to Pune after their wedding, were in the middle of a bitter divorce settlement, in which the woman’s family was allegedly demanding more alimony.

Jayamala had complained of harassment, and was estranged from her husband and had left her matrimonial home last January. She was living with her two children and her parents in Pune. Kumar had filed a case in the city’s family court in this regard, as reported by The Hindu.

Pinki, Sheetal’s sister reported to the Elephant Gate police that her parents and brother Sheetal were shot dead. Initial investigations revealed that the family had been threatened by Sheetal’s brothers-in-law Vikas and Kailash.

Police Investigation

Kailash allegedly confessed that Jayamala had been harassed by the family since a long time. They had allegedly taunted her about her caste and poor family background. Attempts to negotiate alimony with the family had failed. Annoyed over her in-laws filing a case against her, Jayamala and her brothers came down with three friends. Kailash and one of his friends fired five rounds and shot down three people before escaping in two cars, said police sources.

Speaking to the media, Chennai Police Commissioner Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal said that five special teams had been formed to conduct the investigations. This included officials of the additional, deputy and joint commissioner rank. Technical intelligence, human intelligence and CCTV cameras were used to make deductions.

The police suspected that the accused in the murder case could escape to Maharashtra. They then alerted the Andhra Pradesh police. The Karnataka and Maharashtra police were also involved in the investigation. Chennai CP added,

We got the vehicle number of the accused and they were traced to Solapur. One inspector and five other police officials from Chennai left to Pune at 6.30 am on Thursday to nab the accused. They coordinated with the Pune police.

The CP also said,

The accused’s vehicle was spotted at Solapur and when the police began to chase them, they started speeding. They were finally intercepted and three persons were arrested. This included Kailash and his two friends, Ravindranath and Vijay.

Aggarwal even added,

This was a planned murder by them. They came with a plan to murder and brought the weapons from Pune. He added that three more persons including Jayamala, her brother Vilash , and one more suspect, who are still at large would be soon apprehended and a special team has been deputed to trace them.

Additional Commissioner of Police, North, A. Arun told The Hindu,

Our personnel have been working day and night to solve the case and are on the job to trace the remaining accused.

Husband Had Filed Complaint Of Threats Earlier

As reported by The News Minute, the Commissioner also confirmed that Sheetal had earlier filed a police complaint about receiving threats.  Aggarwal told media,

As soon as the case was reported, we got hints of a family dispute. Sheetal Chand had already told the police about a matrimonial dispute and the family had said they had received threats. But they couldn’t identify who the culprits were. So the investigation was already underway in that matter.
