If you are an Indian Man or an NRI, beware of the multi million dollar marriage scam that is aided by Gender Biased Laws under the Hindu Marriage Act.
In a recent article by The Statesman, a woman from Alipore, Kolkata has been taking several men for a ride, where she has married three of them and divorced them on one pretext or the other, demanding huge alimony.
Here’s the Story
Soma Das, a school teacher by profession, has been accused of marrying 3-4 persons, first one in 2011 and others in past few years. The woman has also been accused of cheating men by trapping them from matrimonial sites.
First Marriage
Soma got married initially in May 2011 to a school teacher named Debarchan Biswas, a resident of Baruipur, as per the Hindu Marriage Act. After a few years of marriage, she wanted to divorce him by levelling multiple allegations against her father-in-law and mother-in-law, including that of domestic abuse.
In the year 2019, the case was decided at a family court in Alipore. In the meantime, with the consent of the family, she married second man named Raju Mukherjee, a resident of Dumdum. However, soon she filed for divorce from this husband as well. This case is pending before the Barrackpore court.
Second Divorce Pending, Woman Marries Third Man
The second divorce case was filed by Soma a year ago and the same has not been decided yet by the court.
Meanwhile, in July 2020, the woman married a third man named Ashwini Kumar, who is a resident of Orissa and works in the army’s rationing department. In this marriage too, Soma wants a divorce on various pretexts. She has once again demanded a lot of money and alimony from the third husband as well.
This case is also pending in Alipore District and Sessions Court.
Fourth Marriage
It is also alleged that she has now married a fourth man named Rajiv Biswas, who is a lawyer at the Alipore court.
Statement by 2nd Husband Who Filed FIR
Raju Mukherjee, the second husband of Soma Das, alleged that he did not know much about Soma’s earlier marriage. Their relationship started through a matrimonial site and subsequently, the marriage was finalized with the consent of their family.
However, soon Soma accused him of several allegations and started demanding a large sum of money. According to Mukherjee, this is when the entire matter came to light.
Raju said that it is only later that he found out that his wife got involved with him even before her first divorce. He learnt that Soma had demanded huge alimony even from her first husband.
Subsequently, Raju approached police and registered and FIR with Dumdum police station. The police has started an investigation.
A counter complaint of domestic violence has also been lodged by Soma and her family (Balaram Das, father who is retired government employee and Gautam Das, brother) at the Alipore police station. When the concerned media reached out to Soma, she said,
The case is pending. I don’t want to say anything about it.
MDO Take:
- Biggest problem in matrimonial laws under the Hindu Marriage Act, is lifelong maintenance and alimony to women with or without divorce, on mere allegations levelled against the husband
- Even after several allegations are proven against the woman, she is still awarded a lumpsum amount in the name of financial security
- There is 0 fear of law in the eyes of women, and most of them are aided by their lawyers to use the loopholes in the law
- All men and their families are strictly advised to do thorough background checks of prospective brides, especially when you are getting into an alliance from a matrimonial website and direct reference is not avaiable
