You know elections are here, when every party gets into appeasement mode for their voters. Few years ago, the appeasement was in the form of freebies to all voters, however, an alarming recent trend shows how – after dividing people on religion and caste lines – all parties are now furthering a divide between the genders.
AAP and TMC have been trying to make in-roads and register few seats in the upcoming Goa Assembly elections 2022. While all parties are playing the Gender Card in different states, Arvind Kejriwal has recently promised Rs 1,000 to every single (fully-abled) woman per month in the state of Goa, if his party comes to power.
Following next, is none other than Mamata Banerjee of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), that also launched the Griha Laxmi Scheme couple of days ago, which will facilitate a direct transfer of Rs 5,000 to all (fully-abled) women in the state.
TMC claims it is a direct transfer scheme where women of every household (3.5 lakh families) will be given Rs 5,000 a month. The total comes to Rs 60,000 per year.
The scheme will cost the government approximately Rs 1500-2000 crore which is six per cent to eight per cent of the state budget as per the party.
Lakhir Bhandar scheme was one of the assurances given by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ahead of the 2021 Assembly polls in Bengal. The scheme was implemented in West Bengal.
According to the scheme, beneficiaries from SC/ST community are receiving Rs 1,000 each per month while the women from the general category are receiving Rs 500 each on the third day of every month.
Taking a dig at this announcement by TMC, Former Finance Minister and Congress MP P Chidambaram put out the math of such free allowances Vs the current debt that the state of Goa faces. He said as per the calculation, state government will be spending Rs 2,100 crore a year, while Goa already has an outstanding debt of Rs 23,473 crore as on end of March 2020. He ended his twitter thread by quoting,

The Congress Party’s 2019 election manifesto (Lok Sabha) had promised a ‘Minimum Income Guarantee Scheme’ (MIGS), formally called Nyuntam Aay Yojana (NYAY), to five crore ‘poorest families ’ covering 25 crore people by assuring them a guaranteeing minimum income of Rs 6,000 per month or Rs 72,000 a year.

- Monetary schemes should be made for economically poor families with an aim to enable them move into the mainstream; the same can’t be lifelong and must have a timeframe by when the families can educate their children, who can earn a decent living for themselves
- Taxpayers money cannot be thrown at undeserving people, who are fully abled, mentally sound, capable of earning and already enjoying a comfortable lifestyle
- The promise of free money to all women – irrespective of their background – is a sheer violation of our constitution giving privilege to only one gender, and also a gross abuse and wastage of taxpayers hard earned money
