Yet another #HusbandSuicide has been reported from Punjab, where a married man ended his life after being allegedly harassed by his wife and in-laws.
Case:
Tarlochan Singh, son of Gurdeep Singh, living in Bada Bazar of Basti Sheikh, Jalandhar, ended his life by hanging himself, after being allegedly troubled by his wife Riya Mehra.
Gurpreet Kaur, sister of the deceased said that her brother got married one year ago and the couple was soon going to have a child. However, Kaur alleged that her now deceased brother’s mother-in-law and his wife used to trouble him very much. When he could not bear the harassment any longer, he decided to die by suicide.
Tarlochan also left a note blaming his wife and mother-in-law for his death. When his family learnt about this incident, the matter was reported to the police and the same is now under investigation.
MDO Take:
- As per NCRB Suicide Report 2020 (read below), married men die by suicide 1.6 times more than married women
- However, government and all other women empowerment NGOs only focus on the death numbers recorded for women
- It is a shame that our Gender Biased Laws are leaving young men of India with no choice – either to exit an abusive marriage or escape threats of false criminal cases by wives and in-laws
- Our country still refuses to recognise Domestic Violence on Men and even in 2021, we live with the premise, that Men are the only Abusers and Women are the only Victims
- As per current laws, if a married woman dies under mysterious circumstances within 7-years of marriage, her husband and in-laws are arrested on mere word of victim’s family – even when the woman has died due to accident, her parents end up filing false and fabricated dowry harassment charges on Men and their families, just to get them arrested
- However, like in the case mentioned above, eventhough a married man has died within one-year of marriage, leaving a suicide note, naming the accused, police is not inclined to arrest his wife or mother-in-law
- Such is the hypocrisy of our system, which has allowed several abusive women to get away without any consequences
- These cases may be recorded as suicides, but these are actually cold blooded murders – murders by a system which is Anti-Men
- For all other men facing similar problems, do not give up – You or your family may not get justice even after you are gone – Keep you head up and face this phase of life
