Gender Equality has become a joke where every state government today is almost blindly making ‘women friendly schemes’ by burdening the male gender. One must note that any kind of freebees do not empower women, but will only make them more dependent or forever looking for privilege, instead of becoming self reliant or as our Prime Minister says……Aatmanirbhar!
A minimum of Rs 10 is being collected from men traveling by government buses in order to allow free commute for women. Those who regularly use the bus for their daily commute accused the state transport corporation of allegedly overcharging male passengers in order to cover the additional expenses they incur because they have been providing free bus travel for women. Earlier, the minimum wage was Rs 5, reported TOI.
Here’s the Story
The operation of town buses to interior locations a few years ago was stopped by them due to poor patronage. The only services under operation are mofussil, which charges much more in comparison to town services. Free travel for women is offered only in town services and not in mofussil services. Yet, boards that offer free travel services for women can be seen placed in the front of TNSTC mofussil buses as well, which depart from the Thiruvallur bus stand.
The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), Villupuram, has said that it will rectify the mistake. Running town and mofussil services in Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram-suburban areas outside Chennai metropolitan area are the responsibilities that fall under the corporation.
Senthil, a resident-activist from Iyyanpanthagal, said,
If so, it must be categorised as a town bus service, for which the minimum fare is Rs 5. If they continue to collect Rs 10 per head, then it can’t allow women to travel for free.
Town buses plying from Thiruvallur to Uthukottai, Periyapayalayam, Ramacheri, Kanchipadi, Thiruvalangadu, and Sriperumbudur routes have made these violations quite violent.
‘Ordinary’ and ‘express’ are the two categories of mofussil services, in which the latter is a limited bus stop service and the fare is higher. As per Senthil, there is no difference in the travel time of express category buses when compared to an ordinary category bus, since express buses halt at almost every bus stop en route. Hence, it doesn’t make sense to charge more.
MDO Take:
- Why should fully-abled women not be charged for any service they avail?
- What is the message sent out by any entity that wants to score brownie points by using biased and favourable schemes for women?
- Shouldn’t such schemes be applicable only for certain vulnerable sections such as senior citizens (both genders), disabled people (both genders), others
- Women should stopped be categorising as “Vulnerable” class – either we term them equal or treat them inferior for life by allowing such unplanned appeasement schemes
