On the eve of Father’s Day 2021 today, social media is flooded with posts, pictures, messages, poems, young and elderly children sharing their thoughts about their fathers. Few years ago, no one ever thought that fathers – the other parent – could also be given importance, given the pressures from brands and activists pushing only for motherhood and women empowerment.
It has been a pleasant surprise to see many organisations running offers, campaigns, some even offering paternity leaves to male staff – in totality making our superheroes feel special for all the love and sacrifice they do for they children.
Amidst the celebrations for the first Men in our lives, one tweet went viral which opened up a debate. BJP Member & Media Panelist, Charu Pragya, tweeted:
Happy #FathersDay to all single mothers!
As of now, the tweet gather 3k + likes, 300 Retweets and nearly 240 Quote Tweets.
Men’s Day Out was one of the first to rebut this statement, where we quoted:
While we refrain from making any personal comments, objectively this syndrome of celebrating “Single Motherhood” must be questioned. Several separated fathers are not even allowed a platform to express what they feel about being alienated from children. The minute parents undergo separation, mothers automatically become victims, while fathers are directly labelled as criminals.
Separated women will endlessly brag about the alleged domestic abuse they faced, while separated men who suffer abuse, violence, cruelty, harassment and often even adultery by their wives, choose to remain mum.
Several men have been battling at courts, to get access to their children for few minutes in a month. Some have been spending every penny on lawyers, to ensure they can get a court order for a video call with their child once a week. Many men, who are regularly paying maintenance to their wives and children, do not even know the whereabouts of their kids. Many “single mothers” conspire to cut off complete communication between non custodial parent – father – and the child. They do not not respond to messages, do not answer calls, brainwash children against their fathers – all to satisfy their hollow ego battle.
In every separation, both husband and wife will term themselves as victims, but who empowers either of them to decide access or no access to children. There have been cases, where despite court order, women do not permit any interaction between separated fathers and their children, and on other hand boast of being “Single Moms” on social media.
At the cost of repetition, all separated parents will have their individual journeys – no one has the right to judge the love of a separated father as they do not know the Other Side. This celebration of ‘single moms’ by ridiculing the ‘separated fathers’ must be called out.
We have also invited Charu for a debate on the topic of Shared Parenting. She is yet to revert.
A series of tweets started flooding, where many netizens gave their reactions. While Men’s Day Out does not generalise the situation, we do believe in questioning the absence of shared parenting.
Here are some of the responses on Pragya’s tweet:
