27-Year-Old Man Dies By Suicide After Girlfriend Of Six Years Ends Relationship

A 27-year-old man from Kamatchipuram in Tamil Nadu ended his life after his girlfriend broke up with him. The young man allegedly slit his own throat on Saturday morning, after his break-up.

The deceased has been identified as R Karthikeyan, who hailed from Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu, however, he was presently staying at a rented house in Kamatchipuram.

Case:

Karthikeyan met the girl when he was pursuing BE computer science at a private college around six years ago. The two allegedly started dating but around four months ago, the girl took the decision of parting ways. The victim used to work at a private company in Othakalmandapam, but had not reported to work for the last month.

Depressed over his break up after investing 6-years with the girl, Karthikeyan had an altercation at home when his father went to a relative’s house while he himself walked away.

Initial probe revealed that Karthikeyan had also started taking sleeping pills. On Friday night, the 27-year-old man had an argument with his father and elder brother and allegedly assaulted them.

At around 5.45 am on Saturday, Karthikeyan was found dead by one of his neighbours. The young man allegedly used a razor to slit his throat and end his life.

The dead body was sent to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy. The body was handed over to the deceased’s home after the post-mortem. The police registered a case in relation to the incident.

Gender Biased Media

This story has been reported by Mirrow Now Digital. Shockingly, the digital platform that reported this story has labelled the deceased as “Accused” twice in their article.

Although section 309 is still in effect, the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 (enacted July 2018) has restricted its application:

The relevant provision of the new act states: Notwithstanding anything contained in section 309 of the Indian Penal Code, any person who attempts to commit suicide shall be presumed, unless proved otherwise, to have severe stress and shall not be tried and punished under the said Code.

It is extremely condemnable on part of a responsible group such as Times, to further shame a dead man as accused. Recently, the same digital platform has been publishing articles about a female Tamil TV Actor’s suicide, however, the term ‘accused’ has been omitted from the same.  This acute gender bias that exists in most mainstream media today should be called out.

Editors should possess basic empathy in cases where parents have lost their children. By labelling the dead as ‘accused’, Mirrow Now has failed to demonstrate any responsibility in such a matter.
