Domestic Violence on Men is often looked upon as a joke, because Men are supposed to be ‘patriarchal’ and can never be victims. Here’s a case being reported from Kalyan near Mumbai, where a man was held hostage by his family, including wife and son as they wanted him to part with his share of property.
Case:
Suresh Pawshe (54) lives in Kalyan east, while his estranged wife Durwa Pawshe (44) and son Nikhil (21) live separately, some distance away from the man’s home. The wife and the son along with two other nephews Swapnil (22) and Pushkar (21) kept the man captive according to Kolsewadi police station official.
As reported by TOI, Suresh owns several properties which he had rented out, while his son is unemployed. The accused wife and family wanted the victim to sell off some properties and give them his share so that their financial needs could be taken care of.
The husband was called home last month, on pretext of ‘talking’, when the wife and son allegedly tied him up and made him forcefully sign on a cheque. They later also withdrew Rs 2 lakh from his bank account. Suresh managed to set himself free only last week.
Sahurao Salve, senior police inspector of Kolsewadi police station have confirmed arresting the accused.
While we have a separate DV Act 2005 for women, India still does not recognise Domestic Violence on Men. If this matter reaches court, in all possibility the onus will be rested upon the man to provide financial aide to his wife (not son since he is now a major), despite the ill treatment he has faced from them.
You may also read some comments questioning the man himself, why he was not taking care of the family financially. Whenever it comes to responsibilities, we will always hold Men accountable, but all rights are only for women and children.
