On October 31, Rajagopalnagar police in Bengaluru, Karnataka arrested a woman for stabbing her tenant during a dispute over rent. The incident took place on the previous night and the victim is recovering in a private hospital currently.
According to a senior police officer, Mahalakshmi (40), a resident of Hegganahalli in Rajagopalnagar, went to the house of her tenant Poornima (31) around 8.30pm on the first floor of the building demanding that the latter pay rent which was unpaid for the past four months.
Poornima requested her to wait a few more days as she needed to arrange the money or else deduct the rent from the deposit which was paid earlier. In a fit of rage Mahalakshmi took a knife and stabbed her twice. Neighbours who heard Poornima screaming alerted the police before she was taken to a private hospital, reported the The New Indian Express.
Poornima lives with her husband who works in a garment factory. In a statement to the police, she said that her husband had not got his salary for two months. Mahalakshmi has been sent to judicial custody after interrogation.
Statement By Police
The victim Poornima and her husband Ravichandra, a private company employee, have been staying in the single-bedroom house owned by Mahalakshmi for the last one year.
As per the report, the couple had made an advance payment of Rs 65,000 to the owner and paid a rent of Rs 6,000 per month. Due to the lockdown induced by the coronavirus pandemic, the husband had lost his job as sales executive with a solar light distributing agency in May. His wife Poornima is a homemaker. He recently joined another company. Police told TOI,
Owing to financial crisis, Ravichandra had not paid rent for the last four months. On Friday night, Mahalakshmi went to their house and fought with Poornima. Though the couple requested her to wait for one more month, Mahalakshmi refused to get out of the house unless the money was paid.
Poornima suggested she cut the dues from the advance amount. But Mahalakshmi was not ready to do so as she claimed it was invested in chit funds. When Poornima reiterated their helplessness, Mahalakshmi lost her cool. She rushed to the kitchen, pulled a knife and stabbed Poornima on her hands and neck.
When Ravichandra intervened and stopped her, she fled. We detained Mahalakshmi the same night and shifted her to a women’s rehabilitation centre. She was arrested on Saturday.
