On Wednesday, a female lawyer from Kolkata was sentenced to lifetime imprisonment by a fast track Barasat court in North 24 Paraganaz district for killing her husband with the chord of a mobile charger in the year 2018. The Additional district and sessions judge Sujit Kumar Jha also fined the accused with Rs 10,000 along with life imprisonment.
The convict, Anindita Pal Dey (35) who is lawyer by profession, has been charged with murder of her husband Rajat Kumar Dey who was also a lawyer at the Calcutta high court. The man was murdered on the night of November 25, 2018.
Anindita has also been charged for tampering with shreds of evidence. The court found her guilty of “causing the disappearance of evidence” and this amounted to one-year extra imprisonment for the same. However, the judge explained that both sentences will run parallely.
Requesting for capital punishment, special public prosecutor Bibhas Chatterjee claimed that it was a premeditated murder. He quoted:
This was a unique investigation. The evidence filed before the court was based almost entirely on the convict’s mobile call, chat and Google search history.
Before being arrested, the victim’s accused wife made self-contradictory statements for six days in an apparent bid to mislead the investigators. However, soon it was revealed that the woman had been visiting and searching websites that give information on strangulation, said Bibhas.
Murder
On the night of the murder, the victim’s body was found on the bedroom floor. A few deep marks were visible on his neck along with his face turning blue. The accused told police that he fell from the bed and suffered a heart attack.
Samir Dey, the deceased’s father then lodged an FIR alleging that Anindita had killed his son, post which the police arrested her on November 29, 2018. The father then quoted:
We could not believe that she had committed murder. She behaved normally all day.
Court Order
On Monday, the court pronounced Anindita Pal guilty of killing her husband. However, soon after the sentence was announced, she said that she was framed. The accused later said that her lawyer will challenge the order in the higher court and prove her innocence.
The reason for the murder has not been disclosed, however, police suspected that an extramarital affair must have led to the murder. According to the police, the accused often used to make calls to someone and this stirred up fights between the husband and wife.
However, Pal’s lawyer Pinak Mitra claimed that her client was sleeping in another room when she heard a sound from her husband’s room. Trial and arguments in the case were completed in March this year.
About the Couple
Both Anindita Pal and her husband were practising law at the Calcutta High Court.
The couple’s only child is now three years old. They lived in an apartment in New Town in the eastern outskirts of Kolkata.
