Surendra Kumar Das ,an IPS officer from Kanpur (East) consumed poison on September 5, 2018. Later, he died at a local hospital on the following day. Narendra Das, brother of the deceased then alleged the officer’s wife being “responsible” for his brother’s suicide.

Background

Surendra and his wife Raveena had met through a matrimonial website and got married in April 2017. However, things did not go well between the couple and within less than one and a half years, the IPS officer ended his life. According to Narendra, he said that the woman would constantly instigate his brother against the family, which led to daily fights amongst the two. He quoted,

My brother hinted that his marital life was not going well and that he wanted a divorce. Raveena used to instigate my brother against us, and as a result, he severed his ties with the family and started living with her in Kanpur.

Adding further, brother of deceased then said,

He had last spoken to us three months back. She fought with him when he used to call us or insisted to come for meeting us in Lucknow.

Clearly, the husband’s family held Raveena for abetting the suicide and making their son take this extreme step.

Later, Das’ body was brought to his Ekta Nagar residence near SGPGI. His brother, Narendra, while talking to the reporters, told them that Surendra’s wife Raveena rendered him to take this step. The family also planned to lodge a case of ‘abetment of suicide’ against her.

A large number of people, including both police officers as well as neighbours, arrived to console the devastated family. Surendra’s mother Indu was shattered with her son’s untimely death and also fainted several times, however, her other children supported her to hold herself then.

About Surendra Das

Surendra completed his high school from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Ballia in 2004. Thereafter, he finished his intermediate from Avadh School in Lucknow. Surendra Das graduated from IPS batch of 2014 and was the youngest in the Das family. According to his parents, he was also the brightest of the four siblings. His father, ex Army man had got their home constructed in 2010 and Surendra lived at his parent’s house until marriage.

Narendra said,

We had come to Lucknow in 2004 after my father Ram Chandra Das retired from Army as a captain. Later, my brother cracked IIT, and pursued B. Tech in Electronics from IIT-Kharagpur and got his first job in Coal India in Madhya Pradesh.

In 2010, he quit his job and began preparing for the UPSC.

Investigation

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had expressed his condolences to Das’ family. On whether police will investigate the death, ADG Kanpur (zone) Avinash Chandra then said that action would be taken only if there is a complaint. The ADG said,

We can move only if there is any complaint in the matter. Otherwise there is no reason to do so as the officer himself mentioned in the recovered suicide note that he does not blame anyone else for the step but himself. It was also added that no one should be troubled because of his suicide.

35-Year-Old IIT Kanpur Professor Dies Of Suicide; Family Dispute Suspected

On earlier note, Cantonment police station house officer Lalit Mani Tripathi had told The Indian Express about the suicide note. He said,

The letter was addressed to his wife Raveena and stated that he was doing this (taking his life) because of issues created in his family every other day. It further stated that he loved her (his wife) a lot. At the end of the letter, it was mentioned that he himself is taking this step and no one else is responsible for his suicide.

The health of our police personnels has taken a toll because of erratic working hours, and if the same is combined with domestic abuse from wives at home, even the toughest men — at least physically — give up. While most men in India suffer from stress-related diseases such as depression, obesity and even challenges of being expressive, we as a country, barely recognise these issues, because they happen to be Men. India still does not have a commission for this gender, which could play a balancing role in resolving family disputes.
