A youth was thrashed mercilessly inside the premises of a police station in Odisha recently. A video in this connection has gone viral. As seen in the video, a lady cop is unsympathetically beating up the man with a stick. The video also shows the woman kicking him hard while the man in kneeling down in the police station.
These visuals unfortunately comes at a time when policemen across the country are risking their lives while protecting the common people during lockdown. However, the video of this woman police inspector thrashing the youth and that too inside the police station may not be going down well with a large section of society.
Sandhyarani Jena, the inspector at Patana police station in Keonjhar district, was caught on camera kicking and beating the man, after which a probe has been instructed by her superiors into the matter. The video which has been shot on a mobile phone shows Jena thrashing the youth mercilessly while other staff of the police station remained mute spectators.

The youth has been identified as Raju Mahant of Talasarua village who had come to the police station in connection with a land dispute along with three others on March 25. Instead of reporting the matter and asking him to go to court, the lady cop thrashed him in front of all.
Mahant, who is now out on bail said he was tortured by the cop for no fault of his. He said,
The police inspector needs to be taken to task for her high-handedness.
Odisha police chief Abhay, who took charge of the state police force in December last year has been stressing on the need for police officials to show their humane side while dealing with people. On May 20, Sandhyarani Jena, the Inspector In Charge of Patana Police Station was ordered to face a salary cut of Rs 10,000 towards compensation to the victim whom she had earlier mercilessly thrashed with a stick inside the police station.

Odisha DGP Abhay on Saturday suspended inspector Sandhya Rani Jena in Keonjhar district on the charges of ‘misconduct.’ Official handle of Odisha Police tweeted,
DGP has placed Inspector Sandhya Rani Jena IIC Patna PS of Keonjhar dist under suspension for her misconduct
The victim Raju Mahant who was assaulted by the lady cop over an alleged land dispute said,
We had a small dispute during farming on March 25. Police picked us up and kept detained for 25 days.
Following the incident, Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has sought a report from Keonjhar SP in connection with the incident. Apart from seeking a report from the concerned IIC within four weeks, OHRC had also ordered to pay a compensation of Rs 10,000 to the victim. The rights body had asked that the money should be deducted from the salary of the lady cop.

This is not the first time a lady police officer has taken law in her own hands. Last year, a woman constable publicly shamed a man who was caught ‘allegedly’ eve-teasing school girls in the Kanpur district of Uttar Pradesh.

A news agency reported the woman constable was identified as Chanchal Chauraisa of the Anti-Romeo Squad of Bithoor police station. However, the accused was later taken to the police station and booked under Section 294 (persons indulging in an obscene act in any public place causing annoyance to others) of the Indian Penal Code.
