As per the Hindu tradition, ‘saat pheras’ or seven rounds around the holy fire by the bride and the groom together mark completion of marriage rituals. However, a shocking incident was reported from a village in Uttar Pradesh, where the bride refused to complete the seventh round and called off her marriage.
Here’s What Happened
In a rather unusual event, a bride in UP’s Mahoba called off her marriage after taking six rounds of the sacred fire. Both the bride and groom’s friends as well as relatives tried their best to convince the woman to complete the marriage ceremony, however, she refused to change her decision. In fact, a panchayat was called in the middle of the night to intervene in the matter. Since the bride did not give up, the groom and his relatives had no option but to go back.
When the bride was questioned as to why did she suddenly change her mind and was not interested in marrying the man, she merely replied saying that she did not like him. The groom’s father retorted that if the bride was not willing to marry then why did she participate in other rituals of the wedding like the exchange of garlands.
As per media reports, the woman had participated in all other ceremonies and there was no sign of any tension or argument. Even on the day of the wedding, all attendees were seen in a happy mood.
While several portals will hail this as an empowered woman making her choice, often we forget the impact on groom and his family. If the man would have behaved in similar manner, the bride’s family could have possibly got him arrested on charges of cheating and other relevant sections. However, there are no implications whatsoever against the woman in this case.
Alternately, it is better that the woman called off such an alliance, else the man and his family would be made to pay – literally and figuratively – for the rest of their lives!
