Wife Floats Online Petition Asking Prime Minister Modi To Inspire Husbands To Do Household Work

Its going to be nearly three months to the nationwide lockdown. Both men and women are equally going through mental as well as physical challenges — at home as well as on the work front.

However, some women with their individual experiences and also some brands have generalised bashing all men for not contributing to the household work. We received one such email in our inbox by change.org by a woman named Subarna Ghosh, who has stated an online petition requesting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to motivate husbands to work at home.

The petition reads as below:

Does the handle of a jhadu come printed with the words: “to be operated by women only”? What about the manual of the washing machine or gas stove? Then why is it that most men are not doing their share of housework! 

The lockdown has made me realise my life is no different than that of my mother’s generation. It’s time both partners act as equals and do their share because housework has no gender.

If you are a man, who shares the load, please sign and share my petition with those who don’t!

For the past 2 months, both my husband and I have been working from home, while our kids study and play. He does his job, but I have been on non-stop double duty. I am expected to do all the housework (cooking, cleaning, washing and drying clothes for 4 people), leaving me hardly any time for my healthcare start-up.

Parvin, this is the story in almost every Indian home. Nobody talks about it, except for reducing wives to WhatsApp jokes for popular amusement. 

Frankly, I am fed up. And in one of my lows, it hit me: If PM Modi can inspire us to light lamps and clap in solidarity, maybe he can inspire us to correct an unfair norm that discriminates against women in every home.

Sign my petition asking the PM to address the issue in his next speech and to encourage all Indian men to do an equal share of housework. After all, Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) should begin at home.

Sign my petition because inequality is not a trivial issue. We’ve taken the COVID-19 crisis seriously. It’s time to take the fatigue and stress of half the population seriously too. Parvin, I need your support because even though the lockdown has ended, WFH looks like it is here to stay.

While we cannot absolutely deny that some men may be taking it easy and not partnering with their spouses in the household chores, there are equal number of complaints by men too where women have been throwing tantrums and hurling abuses at their husbands, just because they have been expected to share some household work load, which earlier had been done by the maids.

This is a larger problem and not about Men Vs Women. Imagine we are raising our children where we are showing off how we teach our boys how to cook, clean, etc.; but at the same time we are keeping our daughters away from the kitchen.

In the urge of screaming women empowerment, we are only creating a frustrated society where women believe in demanding rights, but when questioned about duties, it boils down to men being patriarchal.

On the other hand, we have several wonderful examples how many husbands are not just working from home, but also aiding their children with online studies, while their wives are busy posting gender equality stories on social media. Its just that Men never believe in expressing themselves with equal challenges they go through and most womenfolk get away by creating one sided narratives.
