Nagpur False Gang Rape Case | DCP, 25 Officers Remained Without Food Throughout Investigation

Over 1,000 security personnel, including Nagpur Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar and other senior officials, investigated the case on Monday after the woman lodged the complaint at Kalamna police station around 11 am.

After going through the footage of more than 250 CCTVs across the city, the investigators arrived at the conclusion that she had cooked up the gangrape story. The woman later told the police that she did it to marry her boyfriend, a senior police official said, but did not divulge on what were her exact plans. As a follow up, independent journalist Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj reached out to Mr Vinod Patil, PI, Kalamna Police Station, to enquire on what action has or will be taken on the girl for misleading the system. 

Mr Patil elaborated the scenario of police in such cases and exclaimed,

Cases where FIRs are genuine, police files a chargesheet. However, when an FIR has been filed mistakenly, we file C report in court. Also, when someone deliberately gives a false complaint, then we file B summary report in court. Police cannot take action and has to follow orders from the court.

When Bhardwaj asked Patil whether police can’t even take any action against women who purposely file false rape cases against someone to trap him/them, the officer said,

It’s called perjury…When we file B Summary report, court will decide what action needs to be taken….

The journalist further questions PI whether there will be any fine or deterrent or any punishment against such women, to which he says,

There should be reforms within the laws. When a 19-year-old girl came to us alleging that she was gang raped, we all started investigation at once. We went with her to all the spots she narrated, however, we had some doubt in our mind because the girl did not have any abrasions or any signs that indicated physical violence on her.

Despite our doubts, we took her word as the truth, and religiously commenced our investigation. 

Adding further, he shared,

The girl said that she was abducted in a van, taken into bushes, where she was gang raped. When we checked all CCTVs, she was spotted on a different location at that time. 

Patil confirmed that the girl though did not name any accused.  

Speaking about how police officers are being taken for a ride, Patil quoted,

With such incidents, morale of police will go down. Yesterday night, we got another call from control room, where someone said she was robbed off Rs 5,000. We immediately rushed to that spot. Even that call was false, they were fooling around with police. 

Our Time Is Wasted With False Cases

Patil sympathised with genuine survivors and said that Rape cases are being misused a lot like this. He said,

The real victim is not getting justice, because our time is being wasted with such false cases. 

Adding further, PI said,

I am telling you, that day, my DCP and 25 other police officers did not have lunch, because they were investigating this gang rape case, which later turned out to be false. We started at 11am and kept investigating until 10pm that night, all of us just had some snack because solving this sensitive case was our priority. 

We also make mistakes, we work for 12-16 hours a day. Imagine if any of our officer did not take prompt action, media and NGOs would not have spared us. Some NGO was even ready for morcha (protest march) for next day. Now, no one is questioning this case after it turned out to be false.
