The Mumbai Police booked a 53-year-old woman for insulting the modesty of her 36-year-old female neighbour. The accused, who supplies tiffins, allegedly commented on the victim’s short hair, clothes and called her a “eunuch and prostitute” several times.
An FIR has been registered against the accused woman under IPC sections:
- 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman)
- 500 (defamation)
Case:
The incident has been reported from a residential society in Goregaon, Mumbai, where woman A was staying as a tenant. She had moved into the building in December last year and was living alone.
As reported by TOI, woman A initially availed tiffin service from the accused woman B, however, had stopped the same since she did not like the food.
Later in December last year, the son of the accused woman, hosted a party at his residence and allegedly played music till 3.30am that morning. When the complainant woman objected to this, the accused woman started passing lewd comments on the victim’s short hair and her clothes whenever she saw her.

The matter then escalated when the victim had gone to meet with another neighbour on January 11, and the accused followed her and started abusing her once again. The accused allegedly accused the victim of calling men to her residence and also labelled her a prostitute.
When the unpleasant comments and harassment didn’t stop, the victim informed a policeman staying in the same building. The cop advised her to contact the police control room.
On basis of woman A’s statement on Saturday, the Goregaon police booked woman B for insulting the modesty of a woman under:
Section 509 of the IPC ( whoever, intending to insult the modesty of any woman, utters any word, makes any sound or gesture, or exhibits any object, intending that such word or sound shall be heard, or that such gesture or object shall be seen, by such woman, or intrudes upon the privacy of such woman).
Quoting to media, victim’s lawyer Siddhesh Borkar said,
My client was subjected to gross harassment at the instance of her neighbour, a woman, by uttering words and exhibiting gestures of extremely derogatory nature that would amount to outraging and tarnishing modesty of any woman only because she’s a single woman living as a tenant independently and has a ‘bob cut’. The matter is currently under investigation.
