The investigation into the case of a three-year-old girl who was admitted to the ICU of Kolenchery Medical College in Thengode near Thrikkakkara (Kochi) with bruises and fractures on her body has taken a new turn with the police planning to arraign her mother as the only accused in the case.
The investigation carried out by the police confirmed that the mother had beaten up the girl and that might have resulted in the bruise marks on her body. The police informed media,
During interrogation, the mother admitted that she had beaten up her daughter when she committed some mischievous acts.
Background:
A three-year-old girl was admitted to the intensive care unit of a medical college hospital in Kolenchery on February 21, 2022 with bruise marks and fractures on body, triggering suspicion that she might have been assaulted.
The police registered a case against the child’s mother under Juvenile Justice Act Section 75 (care and protection of children) though both she and grandmother refuted the allegation of assault. The incident came to light when the hospital authorities suspected it to be a case of assault.
Though the mother told them that the child had suffered injuries while playing, doctors found them to be burned, they also noticed other bruise marks on her, which forced them to inform the Thrikkakara police which registered a case, reported The New Indian Express.
The girl was first admitted to a private hospital at Pazhanganad in Kizhakkambalam following a seizure. From there, the child was referred to the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church MCH after her condition turned worse. The hospital authorities said the girl was on ventilator support.
Child In Critical Condition
As reported by media last month, a medical bulletin issued by the hospital said that the condition of the child remained critical.
Police Investigation
There were reports that Antony Tijin, boyfriend of the mother’s sister who was staying with them in their rented house at Thengode near Thrikkakara, allegedly assaulted the girl. A police officer then said,
The girl suffered burn injuries and a fracture on her left hand. Apart from bruises, there is an injury in an eye.
When we asked her mother and grandmother about that, they told us that the girl got injured while playing and that the burn injuries were accidental.
Earlier, the father of the child had filed a complaint against the same man with Panangadu police. Following this, the man shifted from Kumbalam with the family.
Motive
The child’s family had got Rs 15 lakh as insurance amount as her uncle passed away abroad.
The child’s grandmother and mother requested this amount to clear the dues in the bank but the child’s aunt refused to do it. Hence, they added one more room on the ground floor and gave it on rent to the man from Varapuzha who got acquainted with one of the family members through social media.
Action Against Mother
In the latest report in the matter, the police are planning to slap more sections of the IPC on the mother. An officer told TNIE,
Earlier, the police had registered a case against the child’s mother under Juvenile Justice Act Section 75 (care and protection of children). But we are in the process of adding a few more sections under IPC against her.
The officer added,
She was not sure about the bruise marks, but some may have been caused following that. However, the mother said the fractures happened when she fell. Since the mother was the only person in touch with the kid, all pieces of evidence point to her.
With the mother being arraigned the only accused, the police ruled out the involvement of Antony Tijin, who is alleged to have assaulted the girl under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The officer said,
So far, we have no evidence against Antony Tijin. Though the father of the girl had said that Antony was the main accused, he was not even there at the house. This can be considered only as an allegation. Even the girl’s 11-year-old cousin ruled out the involvement of others in the bruises.
Child’s Health is Improving
Meanwhile, the girl’s health has started showing some improvement. According to hospital sources,
She has started responding and also started taking food. A surgery might be needed to fix the fracture on her left hand. A decision regarding the surgery will be taken only after examining the brain scan results.
