Karnataka Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar was speaking on World Mental Health Day at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurological Sciences (NIMHANS) on Sunday. A 3-min video clip put out by ANI, which was a part of his entire speech, has now gone viral and the health minister has been facing the ire of social media feminists.
In the video clip, calling it a paradigm shift which is “not good”, Sudhakar is heard saying,
Earlier, we lived in large families unitedly. We followed our religious beliefs. But in the last 2-3 decades, we started competing with each other, leading to stress. As Indians, we need to preach to the world how to handle stress because Yoga, meditation and pranayama are wonderful tools to deal with stress.
Adding further, the health minister also quoted,
Unfortunately, today we are going in a western way. We don’t want our parents to live with us. A lot of modern women in India want to stay single. Even if they get married, they don’t want to give birth, they want surrogacy. There is a paradigm shift in our thinking, it’s not good.
This statement has not gone down well with several feminists, including Gender Biased Media, who have started labelling the minister as misogynyst, sexist, patriarchal, etc.

Here are some of the reactions on twitter:
Musician T M Krishna @tmkrishna said,
And then we wonder why in India rape, sexual harassment and abuse is normalised. Such people should not be allowed to hold public office.
Article 21 of Constitution guarantees right to privacy and personal autonomy. Marriage and reproduction matters of privacy & personal autonomy. Minister says ‘modern women’ staying single and not having children not good. So in effect saying Article 21 not good?
Dhanya Rajendran @dhanyarajendran, Editor-in-Chief, The News Minutes said,
But but but… Didn’t you guys also want a population control bill? So modern women are doing themselves a favour and helping the country too. Yaay
This man, from India’s ruling party run by RSS, a men-only fascist outfit run by a sinister cabal of celibate, violently bigoted hatemongering men, thinks India’s problem is that too many women are modern and exercise choices.
Journalist Seema Goswami @seemagoswami commented,
So it’s bad to be single and not have your parents live with you… Hmmm… Who could this be about??
Dr. Anjali Nimbalkar @DrAnjaliTai Congress MLA from Karnataka also took a dig and wrote,
Seriously!!! These men need counselling on World Mental Health Day. Let her live with her choices no one can decide for her but herself… Any comments on their leader @narendramodi Paradigm shift of living single even after getting married.
Perhaps the biggest way that yoga and pryanayan benefit him, is that’s time he doesn’t spend public speaking.
Actor Shruti Seth @SethShruti commented,
But men can want to stay single, get married not want to have kids; but how dare a woman live her life on her own terms??? Modern women are the root of all problems clearly!
Journalist Faye DSouza @fayedsouza wrote,
Ah! The modern woman of India, source of all problems. If only women would marry and stay at home we would solve unemployment, poverty, petrol and LPG prices, lack of hospital beds, potholed roads, electricity shortage, crime and hunger.
While above are few of the comments received, and soon we may see the health minister almost compelled to apologise for his alternate views on the culture of our country, this is a question which is often struck down even before a meaningful debate.
While MDO is not regressive, believes in freedom and equal rights to women, we do question the aping of every law and way of life from the west. Social Media warriors who are crying misogyny because a man expressed his thoughts on birth and parental care, are the same ones who believe Adultery in marriage is a woman’s choice.
Sudhakar’s comments on single women – MDO is not judgemental about women who do not want to get married, however, the problem lies with those women, who want to marry for social and financial security in society, and then want to defy every norm of a marriage.
Since we cover stories from the Men’s side, we can tell you, how 90% of the marriages today crumble because, a woman first says yes to marry a man fully knowing his idea of family, and then within a month, forces and threatens him to separate from his parents and buy a new property.
Why don’t these same feminists cry patriarchy, when Men are still defined as primary providers by law, and are expected to pay lifelong maintenance/alimony to fully abled working and earning women? Where do these same empowerment warriors hide, when laws only and only favour wives, and they do not utter a word when the mother or sister of a husband is torutred and sent to jail in false matrimonial cases by some disgruntled women?
Today, Men are already being eliminated after their limited role as sperm donor is complete in a marriage. Most women then walk out with children, turning their estranged husbands into mere “maintenance providers” and then flaunting their status as Proud Single Moms!
While K Sudhakar is from the BJP, he must note that his own party had favoured removing the name of a father from passport after the child was in custody of divorced mother (whether by court order, or abduction, or by virtue of being a woman).
Social media has been shying away to debate these matters, and whoever dares to do so, is shut down by planned and co-ordinated media attacks by feminists.
Its not attacking the ‘choices’ of women. But most women today want to have the best of both worlds”

I am a working woman and fully support minister’s viewpoint.
Western society has been reduced to trash because of women centric laws & social inclination. If we imitate the west, we will get the same results.
