Men’s Day Out had published an article yesterday titled,
Jet Airways Won’t Be Hiring Male Cabin Crew Currently To Save Costs On Hotel Rooms
Jet Airways Won’t Be Hiring Male Cabin Crew Currently To Save Costs On Hotel Rooms
The article also carried couple of tweets by the CEO, which stated that eventually male crew members will be hired once the company gets a certain organisation scale.
However, our article pointing out gender discrimination with regards to hiring of cabin crew staff did not go down with several Men on twitter and other social media platforms. They questioned the hypocrisy of brands when it comes to Equality for Women, but Discrimination against Men was passed off as business calls.
Some social media users also tweeted how they would choose alternate airline due to such gender bias.
Jet Airways spokesperson has reached out to Men’s Day Out and here is their official statement on the controversy.
We have a limited number of NCR-based cabin crew, trained and qualified on the Boeing 737 aircraft, on our rolls to operate our proving flights that should take place soon. Several of them have worked with Jet Airways in the past.
While we only have women in our cabin crew in the current start-up phase, as an equal opportunity employer, we will be having men as cabin crew as well once we reach a certain operational scale.
Our current status is not discriminatory. We have only a few crew members at the moment to operate the proving flights. We are yet to commence mass hiring as well.
Jet Airways has always had a gender-neutral hiring policy, and that will continue. The airline earlier proudly operated with a mixed cabin crew, and we will resume that and hire male crew once we get to a certain scale. It should be noted that it will be one of very few airlines in India that hire male crew, as we believe that it is the right thing to do.
The initial women-only crew is only to simplify and optimize rostering and training and layover costs and crew ratios while we are still sub scale and our crew requirements are limited, and is also reflective of the cabin crew applicant pool which is predominantly female.
Amidst the social media uproar, Sanjiv Kapoor, CEO, Jet Airways took to twitter and wrote,
Actually men, and men’s magazines, should do a little more research before jumping to conclusions basis what they read on social media. Especially when what they read is the opposite of what is the truth. See this article for the facts. Cheers.

Kapoor also justified their business call, stating:
You have written the article without context, it has created the opposite impression of what our position is. We believe in gender equality.
Would be good if you could have mentioned most other airlines in India hire only female crew, for instance. To give the full picture.

Kapoor personally took to Twitter to respond to several Men’s Rights Activists. Responding to Arnaz Hathiram – Founder: Men’s Day Out, Kapoor was unhappy with the “Boycott Jet” movement that was possibly triggered due to ‘current’ gender bias.
Arnaz, your article has started a nascent “boycott Jet” movement as it lacks context. We are being accused of being gender biased, when nothing can be further from the truth. Therefore it needs to be rebutted. See here for more info.

To this, Hathiram responded how the objective of the article was not to trend ‘boycott campaigns’, but to put out the hypocrisy of brands that lecture Men and patriarchy, if genders were reversed.

Infact, when we dug up a little further, we learnt that hiring preference given to Female Cabin Crew is an industry norm and not limited to just one airline. Here’s a similar article dated 2017 on Vistara Airlines as well.
MDO is strictly against encouraging harm to any brand commercially. Our only endeavour is to question the farce that plays out in the name of Equality.
