Filmmaker Vivek Aghnihotri Calls Out Bollywood Magazine For Selling Fake Feminism

People today, both women and men are living with many different versions about feminism and feminists. An idea of the powerful word feminism that originated from empowering women, to enabling them become self dependent or to give them a push to become self reliant has been reduced to several shallow inferences today — According to Oxford learner’s dictionary,

A person who supports the belief that women should have the same rights and opportunities as men are feminists. This means irrespective of gender, class, race, nationality, anyone can be a feminist.

However, in the world of brand marketing, where nothing sells better than fake feminism today, the word which was once upon a time admired by all, has sadly been reduced to women being termed as ‘hot’, ‘badass’,  ‘single moms’ or even ‘simply male haters’.

On August 16, Bollywood magazine Filmfare, posted an image of Shilpa Shetty Kundra and Malaika Arora, quoting:

#MalaikaArora and #ShilpaShettyKundra are among the hottest moms of B-town for a reason.

Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri criticised the magazine for naming them as ‘hottest moms’ of Bollywood. He wrote,

I think this…stupidity must stop. What is hottest mom? This harms the cause of feminism…when you create class amongst mothers based on body type. Shameful.

Women on Vivek’s timeline too supported him and called out this fake portrayal of typecasting all women and building a pressure for a common female to ape and follow the unreal photoshopped and plastic world of Bollywood.

Shalini Nair wrote,

How abt kindest, most loving, intelligent, smart mom’s for a change.. There are thousands of moms juggling work, home raising great kids, this shallow post has ignored all that and reduced mom’s to a dress size and an hourglass figure..

Padmaja noted,

The only sick mind can look at the Hottest Moms. Normal people look up to mother for purest love!

@filmfare has really stooped low in terms of journalism. Haven’t seen any creative or boosting post for critically acclaimed actors. Just “hot or not” content.!

I grew up watching d hottest moms around. My mom, Nami ma, Dadi ma with so many wrinkles. Tai ji, & Mami ji whose hugs told us, how they waited 4our visit. mausi & bua ji , who spoiled us. None of them wore mini skirts & hd bodies those cud qualify @filmfare Hot Mama criteria

It can be squarely put under ‘body shaming’, moms, act. Yard stick of being a true hot mom, should be in her achievements of raising well, her children.!

Real Truth.They are the hottest because they invest their money to get the surgeries/treatment done. Perfect Body,perfect skin is all achievable if u invest ur money on that. Truth,If you are natural u will have flaws. So love ur flaws

People like these make an image of what a mom should look like after having kid(s), well common women always feel body shamed because of them glorifying the so called hot mom image

Sir, filmfare has always, always been detrimental to the cause of actual feminism by pushing forth the idea of “perfect woman.” It’s practically garbage.

Neha quoted,

Bring them down to the real life of Mother.! When they have to take care of whole family starting from cleaning till everyone sleeps in the night! These mom have time for every member of the family but not for themselves.! What these 2 ladies have to do other than showing off

If these two are the yardsticks first hottest moms, then they are failure wives / GF’s and marriage breakers/ other woman. Look at both the pros & cons when we hold up the mirror to these Bollywood moms as icons of society. They are so invested in themselves all else is secondary

Shubhi rightly pointed out how this also affects young children today and said,

Such campaigns create feeling of inferiority complex among children of middle and lower class. They start judging their mothers by their looks and not physical labour they put in their upbringing.

Men’s Day Out has always a vocal supporter of equal rights for all – especially when it comes to empowering women with equal rights and dignity in society. However, what we do oppose is the farce of projecting unreal characters as Sheroes, which rots the mindset of our younger generation today.

Such false stereotypes make teenagers grow up, assuming this is how a ideal mother would eventually be. It also defeats the purpose of uniting families — when married women read such articles and despite having a happy family life, suddenly start believing how they have been oppressed by their husbands and in-laws. Liberating a woman is not about perfect bodies or skimpy attires, it is about liberating her mindset and making her confident.

As a society, lets call out all brands and portals that try to brainwash men and women today, taking shelter in the name of (fake) feminism.
