Subramanian Swamy, BJP Leader and Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, tweeted this morning hailing how IIM Rohtak had witnessed tremendous increase in the gender equality ratio, where the institute received 69.6% women in the batch this academic year. Swamy also quoted that a few years ago, this percentage was only 6.8%. He also credited Prof Dheeraj Sharma for this achievement.

Let’s understand the background to this sudden increase in female candidates at India’s premier institutes of management.
Last year, as reported by The Economic Times, the incoming class of 2021 at the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) had set a new gender diversity benchmark for the flagship two-year MBA programme. Thus, most of the leading IIMs — Bangalore, Calcutta, Kozhikode, Indore and Lucknow — ended up admitting the highest ever number of female students this year.

- IIM Indore has 42% women in its newest batch (199 out of 476)
- IIM Bangalore was at 37% (165 of 441)
- IIM Lucknow achieved 35% approximately (148 of 405)
- IIM Calcutta had 31% women (152 of 480)
- IIM Kozhikode has enrolled 30% women (148 of 497)
- The exception was in the top-ranked IIM Ahmedabad, where it’s dipped to 24% (93 of 388) from 26% previous year
This took the overall percentage of women at the top six IIMs to 33.5%, up from 26% in 2018.
Himanshu Rai, director, IIM Indore then quoted,
At the shortlisting for our interviews, we have a criterion called gender diversity factor, where we give extra marks to female candidates. This has borne good results for us.

IIM Kozhikode increased the pre-interview stage weightage for the class to 12 marks, while retaining the importance accorded to academic diversity. As per an ET report dated August 2018, IIM-K started allotting 60 additional seats in its post-graduate programme (PGP) exclusively for women. These 60 women-only seats have been effective since 2019.
An IIM Lucknow spokesperson said in an email that improving gender diversity was one of the top missions at the IIMs. He quoted,
Our efforts are in sync with the decision of IIM-L board to improve diversity in our postgraduate programme classrooms especially with regards to gender.
IIM Lucknow had given extra marks for women in order to ensure a healthy gender mix qualifies for admission.
IIM Ahmedabad, where the percentage of women has marginally declined, does not have any weightage in place for women. Errol D’souza, director of IIM Ahmedabad said,
We are conscious of the efficacy of increasing the percentage of women entering our class. The achievements are slow as the goal is to not to give extra credits or specify a quota for gender or other diversity attributes in the admissions process.

We have no doubts on the intent of these IIMs that are working towards striking a gender balance at their campus. However, is it really fair to evaluate women favourably Vs men who equally toil to get themselves registered? Why is Gender Equality never considered on merit? Why do we want to make women victims in every case and allow them that extra edge to score over men?
The endless efforts of getting women on par with men must be done fairly without thrashing the other gender. Empowerment and Equality must be detached from Appeasement. If we encourage this at level 1 of the pyramid (education), this will continue even at workplaces where highly qualified women will keep demanding privileges in the name of equality.
#EqualityMustBeEqual !
