Another life gone, thanks to the absence of defence laws available to a man in this country.
Nitin Jadhav, a 35-year-old man on Friday afternoon committed suicide at his home in Gomtipur area of Ahmedabad. Before ending his life, Nitin also recorded a video narrating his ordeal and why he was taking this extreme step. The Gomtipur police registered a case of ‘accidental death’ on Saturday.
Jadhav, a resident of Khadawali Chawl, worked with a private firm in the city. In the video, he is seen putting his head in gallows made of sari hanged with ceiling and talking about the harassment he faced by his wife. Nitin is heard saying,
I was harassed by my wife, her parents and her two colleagues. I am so depressed with these five people now that I will have to end my life.
Please ensure that they get strict punishment. Say my goodbye to mother and grandfather. I am fed up with this life. Please do not give my child to her and instead give him to my mother and brother.
I tried to convince her but she could not understand anything. Due to her illicit affair, I and my son are suffering a lot. So, I am left with no option but to commit suicide.
Inspector Chirag Tandel of Gomtipur police said that Jadhav had shot the video at around 1.30pm on Friday and sent it to his sister Lakshmi Mundhva, a resident of Amraiwadi. But his sister only saw the message at around 1.50pm on Friday. When she rushed to his home, it was too late and she found him already hanging.
Tandel said that the cops would take statement of Jadhav’s wife, Priti, and other persons mentioned in the video. The deceased’s body was sent to Civil hospital in Asarwa for postmortem. According to the police, his family members were not in a position to give their statements, to enable cops begin their procedure further.
It is sheer hypocrisy on part of our system; when a husband dies leaving a suicide note/video, the officers still await statements from the accused. However, in a reverse case if a woman commits suicide, the husband is arrested on mere allegations by her family.
