A 28-year-old IT professional allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday afternoon by jumping off a high-rise in Maharashtra’s Pune district. Prasoon Kumar Jha who was working with Infosys at Hinjewadi, Pune, jumped off the 12th floor of a building in Wakad area at around 2 pm on April 28.
As per several media reports, reason why he took this step was not known and probe was underway. The police has registered accidental death case in the said matter. Initially the media reported that there was a possible argument between Prasoon and his girlfriend Priyanka Rawat over the former’s salary which led to the boy taking this extreme step.
However, Ms Nibedita, a relative of the now deceased boy has reached out to Men’s Day Out to share their side of the story in detail. While the matter is subjudice and the police is investigating, it is important for us to put out what the boy’s family is currently going through.
Prasoon Jha was a calm, quite, well mannered and introvert boy since childhood. He was the eldest child of the family and left behind a painfully irreparable void in our lives. Prasoon was forced to commit suicide under immense emotional strain, mental pressure and extreme humiliation by his live-in girlfriend Priyanka. Also as widely quoted in the media, Prasoon is NOT related to any politician from Bihar.
While we are not trying to justify the act of suicide, we do have our concerns and suspicion about the series of circumstances that led him to take his step. We have come across certain contradicting facts as against the statement shared by the girl.
Prasoon met Priyanka six years ago while being employed with the IT major in Pune. The couple was in a live-in relationship since three years. His world was confined to Priyanka, and he spent all his time only with her. He had no social life and was a very private person. After his mother, Prasoon was closest to this girl whom he dearly loved.
Firstly, we wish to clarify that Priyanka was Prasoon’s live-in girlfriend and not his fiancée. There were no talks of marriage since despite all efforts from the boy’s family, the girl and her family were not responding or committing on the couple getting married. The media seems to be calling her ‘fiancée‘ probably because that would show the girl in a respectable and safer reputation.
Prasoon had informed his family about this girl a few months ago and also expressed his wish to marry her. The boy’s family was very open minded and had no inhibitions about his choice. Prasoon’s mom was keen to speak to Priyanka just once casually as she was thrilled to learn that her son had chosen his life partner, however, Priyanka was never ever keen to take up any conversation with his mother. The girl kept giving frivolous reasons that she would speak to the boy’s mother only after Prasoon changed his current job.
Prasoon’s parents even tried to speak to the girl’s parents but this could never materialise as there was no response from them either. With regards to the job change matter as widely reported in mainstream media, the relative shares,
Prasoon was financially stable and comes from a well-to-do family. The salary difference between the two was merely Rs 1 Lakh per annum. Does that really make any difference at all? On one occasion Priyanka had expressed that she too wanted to go to North India and start some NGO.
Regarding his package, IT professionals have salary brackets with similar difference and a meagre difference of Rs 1 Lakh per annum is very common. Just one job switch for Prasoon could have fetched him a package similar to that of his girlfriend. Also, it is important to ask that amidst lockdown and COVID_19 crisis, why did the girl pressure Prasoon so much on this non issue?
According to the relative, Priyanka did admit that she was pressurizing Prasoon for a job change and scaring him of not getting married, if he does not do well in his career. Nibedita questions,
Why?? After knowing a person for more than 6 years, she should have known the extent of mental pressure this would bring on him during these times.
Priyanka’s Reactions On Hearing About Prasoon’s Death
When I called Priyanka after the shocking news, she was abnormally calm and composed. Normal people will get disturbed after seeing a gruesome dead body of any random human being, and this was her 6 year old boy friend but there was hardly any remorse.
While speaking to her, she disclosed some grave details which raise a lot of contradictory questions on the actual circumstances and also their relationship. According to the relative, Priyanka said,
He told love is more important in life, but I used to say money is also important in life. He was insecure because I was earning Rs 1L p.a more than him.
Live-in Arrangement
While Priyanka has informed media that she was living in with Prasoon since nine months, as per the boy’s friends, the duo were living together in an apartment for near three years. However, Prasoon had also rented another apartment in the same building where he never stayed. Initially the boy’s family was not aware that the son was staying with a girl.
The flatmates in the apartment where Prasoon did not stay confirmed that he never lived with them because he was living with Priyanka. According to his friends, Prasoon was very responsible towards the flat and his flat mates, despite not living there and he used to proactively pay for any expenses, didn’t compromise on quality standards while buying any products, paid the house rent on time and infact paid for others as well in case someone was not able to pay. He was financially stable and a gentleman.
How Things Unfolded On The Fateful Day
After hearing about Prasoon’s death, Priyanka said that the two did have arguments and heated verbal fights often. She said,
Jhagde hote rehte the humare , and thoda zyada hua us din. (The fights got aggravated on that day)
According to the boy’s family, Prasoon was incapable of using abusive language or even speaking loudly. When Nibedita questioned Priyanka what exactly happened on that day, she said,
I needed some space and hence asked him to leave.
The family questions,
If he didn’t abuse the girl, he didn’t drink, he didn’t smoke, he didn’t hit her, then why did she ask him to leave the 2.5BHK apartment? She could have asked him to shift to other room room if she wanted her space.
Prasoon was very much paying for the groceries and other stuff in the house, then how could she ask him to just leave that too amidst lockdown?
Family also alleges that Priyanka pushed Prasoon out of the home early in the morning. However, the boy being emotional did not want to leave and when he resisted, she went out and shouted for help until he left. With this kind of humiliation and staged drama, Prasoon was forced out of the house.
Priyanka also asked him to get lost for good and told him to inform his family that she was breaking up. When Prasoon asked about the food arrangement, she told him there was no need to return. Amidst these sensitive times of lockdown, the boy called his mother in despair at around 6:30am on April 28 and informed her about the break up.
Since family wasn’t aware about this live-in set up , he couldn’t disclose that he was thrown out of the house.
His mom lovingly asked him to stay calm and not to worry and that the family is there with him. Prasoon told his mother that he was tired of this and needed sleep; he later went to the other flat where his friends were residing.
He called Priyanka at around 12.30 pm on the same day and asked her to keep his belongings outside, so that he could collect them. However, she once again refused ruthlessly stating there was no need to come as she needed space and that she would return his gifts soon.
According to his flat mates, at around 1:15pm, Prasoon dressed up and went out. That is the last time they saw him. Later around 2pm they learnt that he had jumped off from the 12th floor sometime ago. His last message to Priyanka at 1.28pm read:
You used me well, say sorry to mom.
He couldn’t take this humiliation and extreme emotional trauma from the person who meant world to her.
Some Unanswered Questions
When the relative questioned the girl if she was willing to marry him, Priyanka said,
Prasoon ko jaldi thi, I needed time till he changed job.
The family questions how the girl was absolutely fine to live-in for so many years with a guy who according to her was not stable, but refused to marry him and make the relationship official. According to the boy’s side, Priyanka was never interested in speaking with Prasoon’s family. Nibedita says,
While speaking to the girl, I could only realize how much hatred she had towards him and this suicide perhaps came as a soothing relief to her heart.
She would have never married Prasoon, because she always had her options open in live-in set up. Sad that Prasoon was too simple a guy to understand this initially.
The Wakad police investigated the rooms where Prasoon never stayed; however, according to the boy’s family they should have also searched the flat where the duo lived. The boy’s family alleges foul play considering the behaviour of Priyanka being fully composed and handling the police interrogation with all confidence, moments after seeing the dead body of Prasoon.
We are not convinced with the reasons provided by Priyanka on the arguments between them. There are many questions that are unanswered.
Had it been a girl committing suicide, the live in partner would have been grilled by police. Why not now? Why was she not taken in for a detailed investigation???
Pasoon’s family is demanding a thorough investigation into the matter since they are suspicious that this has lot more to it than the version shared by Priyanka with them and others.
The family also believes that Priyanka wanted to get rid of Prasoon and since he was not ready to leave, she took to violent ways to emotionally abuse him and mentally pressurize him so much so that he leaves for good.
Parting Note
The family is shattered with this untimely loss and several unsettled questions about the circumstances which forced their child to take this step. Unfortunately due to law and order restrictions, they did not even get a chance to complete his final rites while he was cremated in Pune with no family by his side. The family confesses that they are aware they cannot get him back yet needs answers and a fair and unbiased trial.
Boy’s Family On Biased Media
Media has always been lenient towards women, but if a girl can be matured enough to decide on living in and working in IT, it’s a matter of fact that she should be at least named while the stories get published.
Imagine the pain of parents, whose child is cremated and they don’t get to even have a glimpse of him. The relative of the boy who is herself a woman concludes,
I being a woman myself object to any such biased approach towards any crime.
Story Updated On May 27, 2020
The office-bearers of the society where Prasoon died of suicide, issued a notice discontinuing renewal of group accommodation for bachelors and asked them to vacate their flats in two months. The housing society later withdrew the notice after the local police intervened.
Around three days ago, the office-bearers of the society issued a notice stating,
As you know we had a serious issue of a suicide case in our society by one of the group accommodation tenants… Considering the issues with respect to rental agreement status, it has been decided that effective May 23, no new or renewed rental agreement and move-ins will be accepted for group accommodation for the next six months.
All flats that have been rented out for group accommodation will have to be evacuated in the next 60 days and will be allowed to be occupied by families only.
Senior Inspector Vivek Muglikar of Wakad police station said,
Following the suicide, the residential society issued a notice asking bachelors to vacate flats. The move was an act of social discrimination. They have now withdrawn the notice.
Our Take
While the matter is under police investigation, it won’t be accurate to take any sides
However, we fully agree how mainstream media would have gone overboard if the victim here happened to be a girl
In a reverse, a mere 2 para story was published by most news agencies and some chose not to even name the girl
We at Men’s Day Out are providing a platform to the other side whose story also needs to be told
A life gone too soon cannot be any less precious because the same happened to be a male
We all need to step into the shoes of the boy’s family once to understand how crucial the investigation will matter to them at this stage
Crime Has No Gender and anyone guilty of driving the other to ending his/her life must be punished equally under the law
We also urge more men to speak up instead of taking such extreme steps
