35-Year-Old Man & His Senior Citizen Mother End Life, After Repeated Humiliation By In-Laws

Wives dying in matrimonial homes due to harassment by in-laws is real; What is also a reality is husbands and their families ending lives due to harassment by wife’s family. But often when such instances get reported, we end up blaming the man himself of being guilty and taking the extreme step.

A case has been reported from Ludhiana in Punjab, where a 35-year-old man and his elderly mother ended their lives by hanging themselves at their rented accommodation in Satguru Nagar. The man and his mother were constantly harassed and humiliated by his in-laws since the wife passed away under natural death few days ago — that too at her parent’s home.

Police registered an FIR against 15 people from the man’s in-laws’ family, after a suicide note found in the room.

Case:

Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP, city 2) Jaskiranjit Singh Teja said the man’s wife had died 10-days ago following prolonged illness, at her parents’ house in Panchkula. The deceased were identified as Manish Verma (35) and his mother Krishna Devi (65). When husband and his mother visited the city to attend her cremation on June 19, his in-laws assaulted them in front of everyone, accusing them of not taking care of her treatment and held them responsible for her death.

After repeated insults hurled at the man and his mother, they decided to end their life and the man also left a suicide note. The deceased was out of work since the Covid-19 lockdown began, had written a four-page note wherein he accused his in-laws of humiliating and manhandling him and his mother. ADCP said,

Blaming his father-in-law, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, six brothers-in-law and their wives, the man wrote that they were committing suicide as they were feeling humiliated.

According to the note found in the room, his wife hadn’t been keeping well and was under treatment for several health issues. She had gone to her parents’ place where she died.

The matter came to fore when neighbours felt foul smell emitting from their house and notified the house owner, who found the mother-son duo’s bodies and alerted the police on Monday. As neighbours said they last saw the duo on Sunday, police suspect they may have taken the extreme step the same day.
