Domestic Violence and Harassment on husbands is as real as the same is on wives. However, as a society, we fail to acknowledge the other side just because we find it “funny” if a man is beaten, ridiculed or mocked by his wife.
Case:
- Harjinder Singh, 27, worked as a Disc Jockey (DJ) in Baltana, Zirakpur district of Punjab
- Harjinder hanged himself following stress and endless fights with his wife Amanjot Kaur
- The couple was married against the wishes of their families
- They had a four-year-old son and an eighteen-month-old daughter
- The suicide matter came to light when the wife who teaches at a primary school, returned home at 3pm
- Paramjeet Kaur, mother of Harjinder, who lived in Patiala filed a complaint against Amanjot, alleging that her daughter-in-law was responsible for her son’s death
- Paramjeet alleged that Harjinder wanted to attend last rites of his grandmother, and his wife picked up a fight and did not let him attend the same
- The mother alleged that her son was stressed due to such frequent petty fights and found it easier to hang himself
- Acting on the complaint, Zirakpur police booked Amanjot under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code
Husband deaths are NOT one off cases as most mainstream media projects. Read Another incident of husband suicide from Punjab, where Sukhdeep Singh, a resident of Udhay Nagar allegedly committed suicide by consuming poisonous substance on Sunday morning.
- Police have registered a case under Sections 306 (abetment to suicide) of the IPC against Sukhdeep’s wife Ria and mother-in-law Jyoti, on the statements of his brother Dhanpreet Singh of Gurmeet Nagar
- According to police, Dhanpreet alleged that his brother was depressed as Ria and Jyoti used to torture him mentally
- He said Sukhdeep had wed Ria seven months ago, who was a member of a local dance group
- Police said both, Sukhdeep and his wife were residing on rent at Udhay Nagar for past few months
- Both, Ria and her mother Jyoti were arrested by police
In the above two cases, the families of the deceased husbands managed to get the wives and in-laws booked and arrested. However, in several cases, women go scot free unless they are directly involved in the murder of their spouses. Mental harassment is often overlooked for Men and justice is a distant reality for this Gender in India.
Indian Men in 2019 are suffering from the tag of Patriarchy which existed in the 20th Century.
