Domestic Violence on Senior Citizens is an unpardonable act. Most elderly people at that age do not have financial, physical or mental ability to take their children or their spouses head on.
An old woman who is at an age wherein she needs care and comfort, was thrashed and thrown out of the house by her daughter-in-law. Before kicking the mother-in-law out with her luggage, the woman had also beaten her.
Fortunately, a passerby recorded the incident and the same was posted online by an India TV journalist. Since the video went viral, the cops rushed in to see her.
The incident took place in Azad Nagar area of Hisar district, Haryana on December 1. The video had gone viral after it was uploaded on social media. However, Azad Nagar police reached the place only three days after the incident, when the video came to their attention.
Chhanodevi, 80, a resident of Azad Nagar, in Sewani village, in her complaint to police, stated that she has three sons and all three of them are retired from their government jobs. They all have their own separate houses in Hisar. She had lived with one of her sons, Bhagmal Patwari from the beginning.
The accused daughter-in-law was arrested and was produced in court, thereafter, was sent to jail. Meanwhile, the victim also came to the police station and filed a case against her daughter-in-law.

Our Take
- In this case, the elderly woman was lucky that someone recorded her video
- In several other cases across India, senior citizens undergo some of the worst form of domestic violence, often by daughter-in-laws and sometimes even by their own daughters and sons
- However, we do not resonate the term domestic violence with these cases, since we have always read stories where daughter-in-laws have been the victims
- Even today, until a story goes viral, most mainstream English media give it a pass, however, thanks to regional or non-english media, we get to learn several such cases from ground level
