We are seeing many campaigns being run by central and state governments asking women to raise their voice against Domestic Violence during lockdown, which according to agencies, has increased. However, there is no real data on record to access the same. Nonetheless, any form of violence or even murders of husbands do not get reported under any commission and cases like below are passed off as just another death counts.
A 30-year-old woman and her lover were arrested for allegedly killing her husband in northwest Delhi on Wednesday. Initially the wife of the deceased tried to rush off the cremation formalities terming the same as death due to COVID, however, the police was alerted by neighbours who then investigated the entire matter in detail.
On the intervening night of Friday and Saturday when the victim Sharat Dass was asleep at his house in Jelarwala Bagh, his wife Anita called her paramour Sanjay to her house. The duo smothered Dass to death with the help of a blanket.

After receiving information from the locals, police grew suspicious about the cause and stopped the final rites. Later the body was sent for post-mortem and the autopsy was conducted on Monday. The report revealed asphyxia due to antemortem smothering as the reason for death, following which a case of murder was registered.
During investigation, Anita was interrogated and she broke down, confessing she was in relationship with Sanjay, who lives in the same locality. Due to that, her marital relationship got strained and the they planned to get rid of Dass.
According to the police, Dass ran a small shop in Ashok Vihar locality of North-West Delhi. On May 2 morning, Anita informed her neighbours that she tried waking her husband but he did not respond. She also misled all by stating the death was a result of COVID infection that her husband had supposedly contracted.

On the other hand, neighbours did not believe Anita as Sharat did not demonstrate any signs of the virus. This is when they alerted the local police to investigate the case. The neighbours also said that the man was in good health and did not appear to be sick as claimed by his wife.
Delhi police reached the victim’s home and interrogated Anita, asking her to produce documents which would prove that Sharat had tested positive for coronavirus. The wife could not show any documents whatsoever and also her answers were unsatisfactory. The police later called her for detailed interrogation, which is when the woman broke down and confessed her crime.
Anita admitted that her husband was aware of her illicit affair with Sanjay and there would be constant fights over the same. This is when she decided to eliminate her spouse with her help of her lover. She also narrated how on the night of May 1, she along with her partner smothered the husband with a blanket.
Our Take:
- Why does our society not recognise this as a form of violence on Men (husbands), infact that of an extreme one
- If a woman is murdered by husband, the same gets registered as domestic violence death, however, in the reverse the same will be numbered as yet another death of the male gender
- Murders by wife due to adultery are reported almost on a daily basis, yet we fail to recognise this as any form injustice to the man
- Whenever a husband is killed, we want to label it as a one off case and look the other way
