A Bangalore man has committed suicide as he was allegedly unable to bear the harassment from his wife and in-laws. Amongst other things, Srinivas was allegedly harassed for coming home late. The Karnataka High Court has called this “a very strange case”.
Case :
- Srinivas S committed suicide on May 19 by hanging from a ceiling fan
- He left a suicide note stating his wife Suma, her parents Siddagangappa and Sharada, and brother-in-law Sunil Kumar were responsible for his death
- The prosecution stated that the deceased faced ill-treatment for small instances from his wife and her relatives
- When he returned home late, he would be abused by Suma and her mother
- His wife used to often leave the matrimonial home and go away to her parental residence, which led to many frustrations for Srinivas
- On May 17, Srinivas’ brother Ramesh asked him to accompany him to the temple, to which Srinivas refused saying if he did so, his wife and her family members would quarrel with him
- That night Srinivas stayed back at his brother’s place itself
- On May 19, when Ramesh returned home, he saw his brother hanging from a ceiling fan leaving a suicide note accusing his wife and her family responsible for his death
- When Suma and her family approached High Court for bail, the court said what transpired between May 17 and May 19 was not mentioned in the complaint
- The court also said it was not clear whether the petitioners were present in the home when Srinivas committed suicide
- Bail was granted to Suma and family on personal bonds for Rs 50,000 and a surety each and were also asked to co-operate in the investigation
- The court has also ordered the petitioners not leave the jurisdiction of Bengaluru District without prior permission of the Court, till the charge sheet is filed or for three months.
It is a very strange case where the allegations are made about wife and her family members and in fact the husband has committed suicide. Therefore the above circumstances are to be proved during the trial the prosecution has to establish that the ill-treatment and harassment meted out by the deceased from the petitioners was to such an extent in the ordinary course to drive a person to commit suicide.
The accused are originally from Shivamogga but are staying in Bengaluru currently.
