Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF) is India’s leading Men’s Rights Activist organization. It was founded in 2005. Since then SIFF and its volunteers have worked to change and amend many laws. SIFF was founded because of arrest and imprisonment of lakhs of men and women in false dowry cases during 2003-2005.
SIFF is organizing first ever Men’s Rights Meet at Jharsuguda, Odisha on 23-24th, October, 2021. More than 35 participants from various states like Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra are expected to attend.
Every year, lakhs of men are denied access to their children, if they have marital problems. This is severe torture for these men and many men suffer from serious mental ailments or commit suicide due to such policies by the Govt. It is as if a crime that he decided to get married and have a child.
While Govt and political parties are only focusing on empowerment and safety on women, there is nothing done to protect men, who are vulnerable and who are facing injustice. In fact, Govt polices further harm the male victims of domestic violence and false cases.
According to Raja Panda, SIFF’s coordinator in Odisha,
It is a crime to be born as a man in India. It is a crime for a man to get married. It is even a bigger crime for a man to become father of a child. Using Article 15(3) of constitution, Govt has been making many policies and enacting many laws that effectively make men second citizens in India.
Adding further, Suprakash Khuntia, general secretary of SIFF expressed,
Govt is allowing filing of false cases of domestic violence and cruelty, so that women can easily extort a very large sum of money from their husbands in the name of alimony. If a man faces matrimonial problems, then he may end up running around 4 to 5 courts in different cities for years.
Nirmal Kedia of Sambalpur said,
Men are treated like second class citizens in India. Men are denied protection fro m domestic violence, sexual harassment and rape. Women are encouraged to attack and assault men on the streets. Instead of punishing these women, Govt and judiciary are implicating the male victims once the woman makes face allegations.
Statistics:
- Every year 22,000 married men are committing suicides due to family reasons
- More than 250,000 children are separated from their fathers every year in India. Due to such blatant promotion of single parenting, many children are facing abuse and neglect
What Do We Propose?
- Make domestic violence laws gender neutral. Men must also be protected from domestic violence
- Every year, 6 lakh marriages are breaking in India and in Odisha 25,000 marriages are breaking every year. Thousands of men are denied access to their own children during separation and divorce. This is a gross violation of human rights of children and fathers. Govt must make shared parenting and shared custody policies so that both biological parents have access to their children
- In last 8-years, false rape and false sexual harassment cases have skyrocketed in India. Govt and judiciary must punish the false accusers by sending them to prison to deter people from filing false cases
- Monthly alimony during separation or divorce has to be only for a limited duration of time. If a marriage lasts only 1-year, then the woman must be told to find a job to sustain herself and she must not be paid monthly alimony for more than 6 to 7 months. Divorce must not be like a life long pension earning scheme. Of course, if there is a child in the marriage, then both parents must bear the expenses equally
- If India does not want to remain a patriarchal society, then men must be freed from the role of a provider to women or wife. Monthly maintenance to a divorced/separated wife should be only for a limited duration
