2020 Compilation | #HusbandSuicide Due To Harassment By Wife & In-Laws, Others | Top Reason: #Alimony

One more year ends with the traumatic end to several young and not so young lives of Men, due to harassment by wives, in-laws or due to threats of false cases by girlfriends, partners or acquaintances.

The top reason cited in all 77 suicides is largely demand of alimony, maintenance and property by wives and their families on divorce/separation. Many suicides can be also attributed to immense pressure of threats by wives/other women to implicate Men in false cases. Some men have also succumbed due alienation from their children, where women have just left matrimonial homes and do not allow child access to fathers.

The idea behind curating these 77 cases is to demonstrate that Men have been suffering immensely at the hands of women, however, as a society, we still do not acknowledge domestic violence being a reality for men. Violence may not only be physical, the same can be verbal where daily abuses and taunts drive men to end life.

The addition of #GenderBiasedLaws also play a catalyst where Men, especially married ones see a dead end, unless and until they succumb to the demands by wives and their in-laws. Some of the parents of these Men have also not been spared, and they have ended lives, leaving behind suicide notes of harassment by daughter-in-laws.

Separation from children is something that cannot be expressed in words. While we have had stories where men have completely broken down, left their jobs, gone into depression, and then bounced back strongly….some have not made it.

As per Indian laws, if a wife dies by suicide or under mysterious circumstances within seven years of marriage, the husband is booked and arrested by default. However, we have endless cases, where men have ended lives within months or a year of marriage and their wives and in-laws have gone scot free.

We are a very small portal, with limited resources. If we are able to report these stories annually, one can only imagine the number of cases actually happening on ground. As per NCRB Suicide Report 2019, 98,000 Men died by suicide, where top reason had been attributed to Family Problems.

If mainstream media starts focussing on how many men suffering domestic abuse, society and government of the day may at least think of balancing out matrimonial laws, which currently leave men completely with zero defense.
