Why is marriage in India considered a dead end for anyone? Especially, if you happen to be a man, there is no exit from a bad marriage. To top it all, our endless matrimonial laws, make it impossible for men and their families to even challenge such situations, and if they dare to do so, they are served with multiple false and fabricated cases by women.

His Story
My Name is Suraj Kumar (name changed) from Bihar. My father, a senior citizen, is an Ex-Serviceman, while my mother is a housewife. I got married to Ratna Kumari (name changed) in 2018 in an arranged marriage ceremony. My wife is a post graduate and pursuing her further studies. Infact, my father paid Rs 50,000 for her current course as well.
Life After Marriage
We lived happily as a couple for few days. Apart from our honeymoon, we travelled to many other places for leisure. My job demanded frequent transfer and thus Ratna had to live in Bihar with my parents for sometime, till I could arrange our proper accommodation.
Soon, my company provided me with a stable location in Karnataka (location changed), and I was ready to bring my wife to the new residence then. Let me share that Ratna stayed with my parents in our home only for 2-3 days and was eventually living with her own parents, until I managed our new home.
My company provided me with a resort accommodation, where I shifted my wife to commence our new journey. Everything was at our service, right from food to cleaning and other sundry works – all was taken care by the resort staff, and my wife was not required to do anything. It was fairly comfortable life without any problems between the two of us for a few days.
Festival of Holi
On the eve of Holi festival in 2019, we returned to Bihar to celebrate our first festival of colours with family. However, instead of celebrating the same with me and my family, Ratna returned to her parents’ home to celebrate the same.
Once she came back to my place in Bihar, she was a changed person. She started quarrelling with us (me and parents) on petty issues. She never respected my parents and kept discussing money all the time.
I must mention that after our marriage, I used to send money to her account periodically for her needs, however, now suddenly she felt she required much more than what I was providing.
Problems Started Getting Serious
Come May 2019, my parents invited her parents and brothers to our house to solve all disputes that were constantly brewing between the two of us. Instead of trying to resolve these issues amicably, my wife’s family threatened my father with dire consequences. They said we must agree to all my wife’s demands.
Demand For Money & Divorce
It was not even one year to our marriage and my wife said she wanted to leave me and I must pay her Rs 40 Lakh in divorce. My father suddenly felt sick after this incident and when he could not fathom this behaviour of Ratna, he submitted a petition in court in June 2019 and also wrote a letter to SP in the state.
After this incident, our community elders tried to resolve the matter, but my wife and her family were very adamant saying that she did nothing wrong. After lot of insistence from the community members, my wife returned to Karnataka in August 2019 and this time we started living in an apartment.
No Change in Behaviour
I was hoping that they she had put bad memories behind and returned to start a new life. However, in December that year, Ratna secretly called her mother and 2 brothers to our apartment. Her family cornered me and started pressurising me to leave my parents. When I denied, I was beaten up by them – I have also recording of the same.
It was extremely embarrassing as all neighbours gathered in front of my flat. Since they could not do much, they immediately summoned few of colleagues from my office. My office staff came, intervened and shifted me to a hotel instantly.
However, this incident resulted in the loss of my professional project and also this apartment where we were living. I was given an ultimatum to vacate the premise within 24 hours, and thus my wife and her family returned to Bihar subsequently.
Husband Lodges Police Complaint
Next day, I went to the local police station and complained about the physical violence from my in-laws. Soon, my parents came over to Karnataka and we visited the police station, Women’s Cell and SP office as well. However, none of them were willing to register an FIR for the physical assault that I had go through. Despite their reluctance, I submitted written complaints both with police station and SP office.
Wife, In-Laws Started Series of Cases
When my wife and her family learnt of my formal police complaint, they started the process of registering numerous cases against me and my family.
In December 2019, my wife filed Dowry Case under Section 498A and other cases under section 308, 323, 328, 313, 344, 511, 354 B, 506 and Dowry Prohibition Act Section 4. These cases were filed in Bihar.
This did not stop here. Ratna and her family started filing cases from multiple cities with Bihar, which resulted in total 8 cases and 2 FIRs against us from 3 different cities.
Non-Bailable Warrant Issued In Dowry Case
In the Dowry case, a NBW got issued against me and I had to leave Bihar in Sep 2020. Since then, I am living away from my family. The magistrate directly issued Non-Bailable warrant in without hearing our side. Since the Patna High Court was taking longer time due to COVID, my Anticipatory Bail hearing has still not been heard. I can’t travel back to Bihar as I fear of being arrested.
Attachment of Property
To make matters worse for me, my wife used this opportunity to initiate attachment of property under CRPC section 82 and 83. The police then came and took away utensils, sofa, bed and few other items even though the whole property belongs to my father and not to me.
Domestic Violence Case
In the Domestic Violence case, she got ex-parte order and forcefully entered my father’s house on in October 2020. Her family with the help of some goons used gas cutter and hammer to enter our home in Bihar. All my neighbours are witness to this.
Ratna has forcefully taken possession of 1st floor where my parents were living. Besides, she has taken all their documents, money, jewellery, that belonged to my parents, in her custody. Once again, my parents wrote letter to SSP and the local Police station, but it is a pity that we got no help.
Currently, my parents are forced to live on ground floor and they are at the mercy of our neighbours who give them food, water, cloths and other necessary items because all their belongings are in the wrongful possession of my wife.
Endless Letters Sent To Police By My Father
Since October 2020 till date, my ageing father has sent numerous letters to DGP, SSP, SP, DSP and Police station. He has also written National Human Right Commission (NHRC), Senior Citizen Cell, Prime Minister’s Office, Law Minister’s Office – yet no response or relief from anyone.
Verbal & Physical Assault On Parents
Ratna daily abuses my parents and on some occasions have even assaulted them physically.
During one such events in June this year, she falsely accused my father of throwing a stone on her face. She projected that she was hurt and also got my father arrested in June this year. He was kept in the police station that entire night, while my mother was sent back home.
When my mother came home that night, my wife locked the main gate and did not allow her to enter inside. Only after midnight, my mother went to our neighbour’s home and slept there.
My father was sent to jail for 10 days, after which he was released on bail. During this period, my mother was not able to enter our own house as my wife had now captured the Ground floor area as well. My mother was compelled to live in our neighbour’s home for all 10 days.
Fortunately, my wife’s “Right of Residence” under Domestic Violence case has been cancelled in August 2021, however, she has still not left our home and is torturing them daily.
