We as a society, often demonstrate outrage over dowry deaths or deaths of wives due to domestic violence. Most women and men also run endless hashtags on social media demanding justice for such victims. However, when similar incidents occur in the lives of Men and their families, these stories are overlooked and do not even reach English media.
One such case has come to the fore where a man named Himanshu Bedi from Ludhiana, Punjab had died by suicide last year, as he was allegedly upset with his wife. At the time of investigation, police had registered a case under Section 174, however, the case has taken a new turn, after eight months based on a complaint lodged by the victim husband’s mother. The case has now been registered under Section 306 of the IPC at the Salem Tabri police station on Sunday.
Case:
25-year-old Himanshu Bedi who belonged to Swati Nagar area in Ludhiana had died by suicide hanging himself at his home. The case which was initially registered under Section 174, revealed certain details during the investigation. It was learnt that Himanshu’s wife Aditi Khatri (24), had allegedly seized some immovable property of the victim, which compelled him to take the extreme step.
The local police have now learnt additional details in the matter, following a complaint by Himanshu’s mother, Ms Nina Bedi in July 2020. As reported by Jagran, the complaint lodged by the mother stated:
During lockdown, Aditi transferred Himanshu’s Rupees three lakh and jewellery worth lakhs to her own parents who lived in DLF Phase 3 in Gurugram. When Himanshu asked her to return his immovable assets, Aditi allegedly started quarrelling with him and also threatened to file false cases against him.
Due to these threats, Himanshu was allegedly under acute mental stress and on June 17, 2020 he hanged himself and ended life.
SI Tamanna Devi said that a police team is being sent to Gurugram to arrest the accused.
Background:
As reported by TOI, Himanshu met Aditi at a marriage function in Rajasthan in December 2018. The couple tied the knot without informing Himanshu’s parents and later started living together in Ludhiana.
According to Nina Bedi, they only learnt of their son’s marriage in December 2019, post which a formal wedding reception was organised by the family.
However, within few days into marriage, Aditi informed Himanshu that she was getting several modelling offers from Delhi. She collected nearly Rupees three lakhs cash and jewellery from her husband and left alone for Delhi.
Aditi kept demanding more money from Himanshu, and when he refused and asked her to return all his valuables that she had handed over to her parents, the wife started threatening to implicate husband and his family in false cases if they dared to lodge a complaint against her.
Himanshu later ended life and left a suicide video, which was handed over to police by his family.
