Acid attack do not have a gender. However, you only read news when the victim is a woman. As a society, it only pains us when the acid attack survivor is a woman. Sadly, English media conveniently escapes publishing such stories when a woman is the perpetrator and man is the victim.
A 22-year-old student from Haryana was attacked with acid by his alleged girlfriend, as he wanted to pursue higher studies and refused to marry at the moment.
Case:
On Friday, Shubham Soni, 22, resident of of Dumarkhan Kalan village of Uchana was attacked by his alleged 23-year-old girlfriend on Jat College Road in Hisar, Haryana. The accused girl is said to be differently abled and a resident of Surya Nagar. The youth suffered burns on his neck, arms, legs and chest in the accident. Shubham’s elder brother Deepak informed Amar Ujala that the girl is the daughter of his wife Priyanka’s aunt.
The accused girl was allegedly pressurizing Shubham for marriage since many days. Deepak said that the family was planning to send Shubham to Canada for higher studies and he had also received his visa for the same. The girl allegedly kept pressuring the victim for marriage, while he asked her to hold on till he returned after completing his studies.
This is when the accused girl called Shubham on pretext of meeting him at the Jat College Road on Friday afternoon, where she threw acid on him.
Passersby got Shubham admitted to the hospital immediately, however, his brother Deepak said that he did not get any treatment there. Thereafter, Shubham was admitted to the civil hospital.
On receiving the acid attack information, local police reached the spot and recorded the statement of the victim. Deepak said that the accused girl’s brother even told him that “he was still ready to get his sister married to Shubham”.
Deepak informed police that the accused girl’s brother has a jewellery shop in Surya Nagar and he suspected that the woman might have brought acid from his shop itself.
Matter is under investigation. If genders were reversed, accused man would have been arrested, however, justice for Men is extremely difficult, sometimes impossible.
Compensation For Male Acid Attack Victims
In February 2018, advocate Anuja Kapur who represented her 35-year-old client, Chandrahass Mishra, acid attack survivor felt immensely happy when Chief Justice Dipak Misra uttered:
We are issuing notice on your public interest litigation.
For Kapur and her client Mishra, it was a moment of glory as India’s highest court not only agreed to probe into continuing acid attacks in the country despite the stern orders in 2013 aimed at curbing it, but would also look into the discrimination against male victims in a society which believes that only women can fall prey to it.
According to National Crime Record Bureau, more than 30-40 per cent of acid attack victims are men. Read report here.
