A young officer working for the forest department in Maharashtra died by suicide alleging domestic violence by his wife and in-laws. The husband was allegedly harassed and tortured for money by his wife and her family members.
Case:
Anil Abasaheb Jagtap married Ashwini, daughter of Ajinath Devrao Bhavar of Desur in the year 2014. Within ten days of marriage, the couple moved to Anil’s parental home in Shirur Kada. Soon there were frequent arguments between the couple and the woman allegedly started demanding records of his earnings and expenditure prior to marriage. Ashwini had also warned Anil not to part with any money for his parents.
The wife would also beat up her husband and this harassment and domestic abuse kept continuing. On one occasion, Ashwini also hit Anil on his head for paying monthly expenses to his own parents. When Anil informed his in-laws, they sided with their daughter.
Anil moved to Ashti in Beed three years ago. In May this year, Ashwini returned to her parents’ home for a surgery. Despite repeated phone calls from Anil, she refused to return. She warned Anil that she would not come back until he transferred the land and plot on her name.
After constant humiliation and harassment, Anil ended his life by hanging himself from a tree on Muggaon Road in front of Sringeri Devi on the afternoon of May 28. The incident came to light on May 29.
Anil’s father has accused Ashwini of physically and mentally attacking Anil, while demanding transfer of property. A case has been registered against four persons including his wife in this regard.
After receiving official complaint, the police recorded statements of Anil Jagtap’s father, and started investigation. The findings are now complete and the police concluded that Anil ended his life due to harassment and threats by his wife and her family. A case has been registered against Ashwini Anil Jagtap and her family members Ajinath Devrao Bhavar, Vijubai Ajinath Bhavar and Mahesh Ajinath Bhavar for abetting suicide.
