Last evening, Lok Sabha MP Anubhav Mohanty put out several tweets, including couple of videos, questioning domestic violence as alleged by his estranged wife Varsha Priyadarshini.
In the tweets dated December 19, 2021, Mohanty wrote,
Same date, last year, with all honesty and honour, had requested someone to allow me an access of at least 1-2 minutes to my home on emergency (if at all) with a clarity that neither me nor my family had any intention of throwing her out of home till the final judgment !
We fully cooperated with the police and provided them with all the audio-visual (cctv) evidences etc. proving our innocence. But shockingly, me & my office staff were booked under 498A, 506, 341 & 34 !
We are innocent. Fair investigation is undoubtedly expected. The wrong doers must be punished but not the actual innocents please ! Its more than a year now ! My Mother, Bro’s Wife, My dearest little Niece are also Girl/Women ! WHY’RE THEY DEPRIVED OF JUSTICE !? PAINFUL !
Sharing couple of video clips which are allegedly the CCTV footage of his home in Odisha, Anubhav said,
A small clip of the full CCTV footage which clearly proves my honesty ! The entire footage is with the police since nearly a year now ! I’m sharing this video only after failing to get justice for more than a year now !
Another clip from the same footage was subsequently tweeted by Mohanty where he wrote,
This is another clip from the same incident’s footage captured by the CCTV ! Please watch & say whether I was throwing her out of the house or it was me who was rather begging her & police to allow me to be in the house !
Anubhav Mohanty – Varsha Priyadarshini On-Going Divorce Case
Mohanty and Priyadarshini, both leading actors of Odia film industry got married in 2014. The duo had acted in several Odia movies together. Mohanty is considered close to chief minister Naveen Patnaik as he defeated the CM’s bete noire Baijayant Panda from Kendrapara in 2019 Lok Sabha election.
In September 2020, Varsha filed a petition before the court of Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate of Cuttack, under section 12 of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, alleging that her MP husband used to hit her after getting drunk. Accusing Mohanty of being a drunkard and her family members of humiliating her, she levelled allegations of being treated like “an insect”.
Allegations by Wife
Varsha alleged in her petition,
He is a drunkard and womaniser. Even he was forgetting his normal life at the time of his drinks and used vulgar language. After the last general election of 2019, the torture by Mohanty and his family members increased day by day which was beyond tolerance.
Priyadarshini further alleged that for two months during the lockdown period, she was left alone at her in-law’s house in Cuttack and the MP did not take her to Delhi despite her pleading. Her petition read,
After coming back from Delhi, my husband became violent and shouted at me. On June 7, my husband and his father rebuked me in filthy language for nearly two hours. On June 11, my husband asked me to agree for mutual divorce and threatened me with dire consequences if I did not agree.
In the petition, Varsha has demanded Rs 15 crore compensation from Mohanty for the loss of her income as an actor as well as medical expenses and monthly alimony of Rs 70,000 towards house rent and maintenance.
Mohanty’s Statement
Reacting to the allegations, Mohanty said he never intended to make his personal life public. Speaking to the media last year, Anubhav quoted,
My marriage has been in bad shape since long. I have tried my level best to reason, to explain, to understand, and to make amends. Unfortunately, things did not shape up as expected. the marriage is irretrievably broken.
Mohanty added that it was him who had filed a divorce petition at Patiala House Court in Delhi in July 2020 on grounds of cruelty, harassment, tyranny refusal of his wife to consummate the marriage, and the Domestic Violence case in September 2020 was a rebound to stop divorce petition.
In his petition, Mohanty accused his wife of humiliating and disregarding him and his family on multiple occasions. Adding that his wife had been falsely accusing him of infidelity and even threatened to file false criminal cases against him and his family, Anubhav said,
She hardly stayed at her matrimonial house and used to create fake situations to instigate a fight. Though we were married from 2014, we have stayed together only for a period of 18 months. Our marriage was never consummated as my wife refused to have a physical relationship.
After an entire year of cases and media statements, in August this year, a family court in Cuttack rejected a plea filed by Varsha to quash the divorce petition filed by Mohanty, without hearing.
The plea was filed by Varsha’s counsel citing factual errors in Mohanty’s divorce petition. However, the Family Court rejected her plea by stating that the divorce petition has enough facts which summons a thorough trial. So, it cannot be quashed at the initial stage, the court then pointed out.
