5 Fold Increase In Number Of Domestic Violence Complaints Received From Husbands Against Wives | Bharosa Cell, Pune Police

Who says Domestic Violence has a Gender? According to Pune City Police’s ‘Bharosa Cell’, the number of complaints reported by Men against harassment, has increased sharply in the last one and a half years of lockdown. According to the latest media report, while complaints from women doubled, there was a five fold increase in the complaints received from Men.

The police remarked that couples were living 24/7 under the same roof for a prolonged time due to pandemic restrictions. This has been leading to multiple conflicts among them. Consequently, the incidents of domestic violence and arguments increased during this period.

Assistant Police Inspector Sujata Shanme, in-charge of Bharosa Cell, said that before lockdown, there were:

• 1,283 complaints of domestic violence

Out of this,

• 791 complaints were lodged by the women
• 252 complaints were lodged by the men

However, the number of complaints increased during the lockdown. In the last 15 months, the total number of domestic violence complaints tallied to 3,075. Out of this:

• 1540 cases were lodged by the women
• 1535 complaints were lodged by the men

API Shanme said,

The nature of cases includes beating, physical and mental harassment. In many cases, the wife left the home along with the children and did not return to her husband which caused a mental disturbance in men.

As the couples have been staying together for a long time, they tend to argue over trivial issues, thereby, leading to an increase in incidents of domestic violence.

Bharosa Cell

The team comprises of police, lawyer and counsellors who communicate with couples over the phone or via online mediums, trying to counsel them over their domestic abuse matters.

According to police, more number of women were reporting cases of domestic violence during in the first lockdown in 2020. However, after unlock happened in September last year, complaints from Men have considerably gone up. The officer added that there were cases where one of the spouses was working, the other was not able to cope up with workplace woes. The couples need to give space to each other. There is a lack of communication between such couples which has led to frequent arguments.

Formed with the purpose of providing aid and counseling to children, women and the elderly, the ‘Bharosa Cell’ of Pune Police completed two years on January, 09, 2021.
