A 20-year-old boy died by suicide in the Malda district of West Bengal, after being forcefully married off to a girl by the village panchayat.
Case:
Manik Mandal, a resident of Mankut Dam region in Manikchak village in Malda district, decided to end his life after the villagers compelled him to marry the girl with whom he was seen at a park. On Sunday, people from the village had seen Mandal in a garden with his girlfriend – Class 10 student. As a punishment, the panchayat ordered the couple to tie the knot.
Mandal and the girl were even married off at a temple on the very same day. Mandal’s mother was against the marriage, however, despite her disapproval, panchayat members left the couple at Mandal’s home. On Monday, the young man allegedly hung himself to death after a dispute with his mother regarding this forced marriage.
Mandal’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, while police was investigating the case.
