UK Court Orders Dubai Ruler To Pay $728M Alimony To Alleged "Adulterous" Wife In Divorce (Representation Image Only)

In one of the largest divorce settlements ever handed down by a UK court, Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum has been ordered to pay his ex-wife Princess Haya bint al-Hussein more than $728 million (INR 5,540 crores approx).

The sum will be used to cover Princess Haya’s security costs for the rest of her life, as well as ongoing costs for the couple’s two children — Al Jalila Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum (14-years-old) and Sheikh Zayed Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum (9-years-old).

Dubai ruler has been ordered to make a down payment of $333 million in the next three months.

The total settlement has no fixed value because the court ruled that Sheikh Mohammed must pay the annual security costs for his two children for the rest of their lives or until a new court order is issued.

In his written judgement published on Tuesday, Justice Moor found that the biggest threat facing Princess Haya and her children Jalila and Zayed, is from Sheikh Mohammed himself, not from outside sources.

The decision was made in light of the Sheikh’s “campaign” of intimidation against Princess Haya, which included “his ability to use the Pegasus software, which is only available to governments,” to spy on the Princess and her staff, as revealed in court documents in October.

Details of the affair were discussed in court earlier in the case, including allegations from the Princess that she received a threatening phone call about it from Sheikh Mohammed at the time, leaving her “terrified.”

The divorce agreement concludes a years-long battle between the estranged couple, during which the UK high court ruled that Sheikh Mohammed used his “immense wealth, political power, and international influence” to bully and silence the 47-year-old princess.

A separate ruling issued in March 2020 determined that Sheikh Mohammed had previously organized the kidnapping of two of his daughters and forcibly returned them to Dubai, where he held them against their will.

The Sheikh has repeatedly denied all of the allegations in the case.

Background (Report by Daily Mail UK, Nov 2020)

The ruler of Dubai’s princess wife allegedly had a two-year affair with her married British bodyguard — and paid at least $6.4 million to try to keep it quiet.

Princess Haya’s cheating was exposed in a child-custody fact-finding ruling in London’s High Court that said she “embarked upon an adulterous relationship with one of her male bodyguards.”

The court ruling didn’t initially identify the bodyguard, but the Daily Mail reports that the 46-year-old princess allegedly seduced Russell Flowers, 37, with a slew of luxury gifts including a $16,000 watch and a $66,000 vintage shotgun.

She also allegedly paid him $1.6 million to keep it from her then-husband, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum, sources told the outlet.

Haya also paid the same amount to buy silence from three of Flowers’ fellow Dubai royal family bodyguards who knew about the alleged affair that started in 2016, the Mail reported, without naming sources.

Sources at the Sheikh’s 3,000-acre estate of Dalham Hall in Suffolk reportedly told the UK outlet,

It was an open secret among the team that he was involved with her.

The cheating was soon exposed, however, destroying the bodyguard’s four-year marriage — and forcing the terrified princess to flee Dubai with her two children after being confronted by her husband in 2018, the report said.

During the Sheikh’s attempts to get custody of their then 11-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son, the UK court ruled that he inflicted a “campaign of intimidation” against Haya and taunted her over the affair.

It included divorcing her without telling her, having guns left in her bedroom and trying to have her abducted by helicopter, the report said. A family friend of Flowers and his now-ex-wife told the Daily Mail,

Haya should be ashamed of the way she went after a married man. There is no excuse.

Adding further she said,

Russell should be ashamed of the way he treated his wife. His behavior was disgusting. The divorce left his ex-wife shattered and it has taken a long time for her to get over the betrayal.

Flowers and his ex-wife both then refused to talk to the Mail. The three other guards alleged to have been paid $1.6 million hush-money were barred from discussing the affair or their work with the Dubai royal family, the outlet said, while not identifying them.

Background

The princess married Sheikh Mohammed in 2004, becoming his sixth and “junior wife” until their divorce last year. She now lives in a $113 million home in one of London’s most exclusive neighbourhoods, Kensington, with their two children..

During the drama, the Sheikh had posted a poem online accusing an unidentified woman of “treachery and betrayal.”

Messages left for representatives for the Sheikh as well as his princess ex were not immediately returned Friday.
